There is another aspect of the piston assembly you should consider - the spring is not fixed in place on top like on the bottom. So if the top of the spring is not centered, it can force the piston rod to tilt. This would cause more pressure on one side of the bore and potentially leave marks (check your plastic piston ring for dark marks on one side). And, of course, this can easily happen when you remove the springs.

pinky-and-me I think you are indicating the spring on the outside than the smaller one inside.

Even if it is not centred, the compression and the subsequent force cannot cause it to shift to the left or right, can it? Because, the whole thing is very tightly held in place by the locking nut, which must be looser to create that scratch causing shift. It may however be possible that the piston head isn’t tighter in these cases, unless it loosens over time. I opened it after 3 months, the piston was tighter than in the past.

Am I missing something? 😊

Theoretically, the force is so much, the whole piston might shift, if one is not releasing the lever gently. A gentle release neutralises wobbling or a sudden shift and prevents scratching

Only the ACS can advise us the cause.

Norvin One more thing, just a thought, I noticed that the piston was far easier to file than I would have expected for stainless. Looking at the filed edges they look like they have a brass colour. Is it possible that our stainless pistons are actually made from plated brass?

Mystery solved…Bore is stainless steel.

Piston is Zero Lead brass, so it has a silvery colour (unlike lead free brass which doesn’t and still has a very small amount of lead)

Cuprajake @LMSC just supplied the link. The wood is olive and was 90 euro more. It is olive wood which is much lighter so I thought the black would look better or at least not 90 euros worse!

Dave…could zero lead brass scratch stainless steel? I am a bit confused about this.

Earlier today I used Norvin’s piston removing tool (BIG THANKS, NORVIN!) to remove the piston in my Evo. I cleaned then greased and reassembled it all. I needed to know that the bore in my machine wasn’t getting scratched. Luckily it is fine.

Is this something that Evo owners should worry about?

Paolo5 I found it at post 1294 or something, but there is too little 3rd hand detail. I can’t speculate. If it’s the mark I see, is it a mark a scratch, how deep, can it be felt. Why is it only at the lower point, how do we know the spring is twisting, if it is, why is it right at the bottom before the piston has moved.

Did anyone leave the shower screen off pull the lever down, and watch to see if the piston actually twists or moves or scratches. Without a more precise forensic type of investigation and information something coming 3rd and with a picture of a boron a theory about what’s going on is very very difficult for anyone to come to any conclusion. So I don’t know how ACS would ever know whether there’s a problem and if there is, how to fix it.

I do not see anything obvious externally. One needs to look at the lever pull and release without the inner chamber, which isn’t possible. I recommend @danielpugh and @DenisS’s friend facilitate a clip each as their machines are affected.

LMSC So no twisting of the piston visible. No marks in the bore or scraping…so yours all looks good. Perhaps no machines have a twisting piston. Fault diagnosis needs precision and confirmation of guesses. You have done just one of the things they should have done.
