Coffee is great on its own and also with milk. Anyone who has ever travelled to Italy will know( especially in the south) coffee is a ritual that few Italians can daily do without. Over the years variations on this theme have developed in bars over there. One of those is caffé affogato, which literally means drowned in coffee.

It is a simple but great recipe that is literally a double espresso with a scoop of Ice cream then dipped into it, usually vanilla flavoured or simply fior di latte.

This version dates back to around the 1950s in Italy and like most Italian recipes is simple but tasty.

I was really surprised by how good this was. Tried it last year some time with a small scoop of homemade vanilla icecream. Pulled a double shot over it and didn’t have high expectations based on previous experience of pulling shots over ice, but it was incredible.

I love making (and consuming) an affogato in summer before a run, the caffeine hit and kick of sugar are like a much nicer energy gel.

I love this with a simple white chocolate ice: Melt 300g of white chocolate over steam. In a separate bowl whisk 3 egg whites with a pinch of salt and 2 spoons of sugar. In a third bowl whisk 250ml double cream. Fold everything gently and freeze. Then do a shot of espresso over a ball of that. 🎆

I’m not sure what this means, but I only like espresso in a shot without anything added, or in an Affogato. In other words, no milk or sugar, or a heroic amount of milk and sugar. 😉
