My printer is giving up the ghost , I am looking for a new all in one, suitable for general printing, decent photo's and duplex printing. Preferably with economical inks. Any thoughts / good buys/ don't touch with a B/P

I have an HP all in one, HP OfficeJet Pro 6970, and I subscribe HP instant ink. So, the running cost for me is approx. £42 per year and we print quite a bit. However, I think these days you are better off with a laser printer, but I never owned one.

It's been a while, but you have canon with the ink absorber pad preprogrammed printer death. I say death because the cost to replace the pad on my printer was more than it cost for a new printer. I said to the service company, bet you don't do many of those. He cursed cannon and said, no, but we were forced to buy all the supplies. he was the one who gave me all the engineering service codes for my printer, including how to reset the ink absorber message. I sued my printer for about 15 years…just refilling the original cartridges. I didn't realise that I needed to use a special pigment ink for black…which was actually super great, because it meant I didn't ever need a new head….due to clogging. I finally retired it because I was fed up with refilling ink cartridges every 30 odd pages. I moved to an LED laser printer in 2016…wish I had done it far earlier. Higher printing speed 1000+ pages from colour cartridges and double that from the black. I use only compatible toner. You can get 2 full changes for 40, or a set of 4 (1 change) for £23-£26. Great printing quality and waterproof prints.. I use an OKI MC342 multifunction, printer scanner (great scanner with flat bed and multi sheet feeder, fax etc. The reason I got this specific printer…£150 delivered, full fat cartridges installed, not starter cartridges and compatible toner easily and cheaply available. One on amazon looks good, availability of cheap compatible cartridges with good yield. More importantly the cartridges don't contain any funny individual print drums…just the tone…very similar to how mine operates. My advice, unless you have to have an inkjet, get a laser. I too have got the HP instant ink subcscription and it's very convenient, but print quality isn't fantastic on my Deskjet 2630. The scan feature is useful however.

I've been using the same old Canon inkjet happily for the last 12 years. Or I was until last week. I've been lucky with it, no issues with clogging heads, someone gave me a big box of compatible inks about 10 years ago that they had no use for and I was still using them - was down to the last dozen though. Printer lived on a shelf 5 foot up in a cupboard, it's wifi and gets little use so it was fine in there. Until my cat decided to attack it when she saw the little paper flap drop down and heard the whirring noises. This happened a few years ago with a different cat and the printer (and the cat) survived the fall with minor cosmetic damage (on the printer, not the cat). Wasn't so lucky this time - it was goosed - throwing up a generic error code that I couldn't clear even with the help of the google hive mind. I simply replaced it with the cheapest printer I could find which happened t be another Canon inkjet - £45 delivered direct from Canon. It meets my needs (the odd postage label!). Amazed how flimsy it feels compared to my old one though, it feels like it is about a quarter of the weight of the last one, which doesn't bode well for the next feline intervention

Laser jet pro here. My daughter has a HP277 since 2012 and is still going strong. We have a HP LaserJet Pro M477 FDW since 2016. The toner lasts for a very long time. Touch wood.

When I closed my home office, I gave away everything but a good sheet feed scanner. I bought a Canon Pixma on offer in Aldi for £28. It printed and scanned and that was all I needed. It never clogged up and often went a week between use. A few weeks ago I had to replace the ink cartridges and it cost me £37! A week later it broke! I replaced it with another similar updated version and that arrived with error codes that the factory said were terminal. So, I bought an HP which was slightly dearer (£45) but it came with their free 6 months worth of ink offer. Once that expires then they charge £1.99 per month for up to 50 sheets of paper which will more than cover my needs. Thats £24 per year which is a lot less than I just paid for for after market ink for the Canon. The printer stays on 24/7 and through the smart ap stays in contact with HP. I have printed around 10 sheets and presumably the ink that came with it is at a level where it contacted HP who emailed me to say that new large sized ink cartridges were being send to me along with recycling bits for the old cartridges. It might not suit everyone but the maths work for me. It also has a 2 year warranty!

I bought an Epson with big liquid ink tanks about five years ago after my HP Bizjet died and I needed something in a hurry. So far I've only had to refill the black once at a cost of under a tenner for genuine Epson ink. This compares with at least £100 a year in HP cartridges. I've printed hundreds of colour photographs and a fair bit of black and white text etc. The print quality is excellent, it's a bit slower than the HP and chunters a fair amount but I don't care. If it dies I'll buy a better version of the same thing.

@"MediumRoastSteam"#p1431 - after 4 years of service, the print head decided not to output cyan anymore. Took the thing apart, cleaned the print head with isopropyl… nada. Pushed isopropyl through the affected inlet nozzle. Changed the cartridge too. Nothing.I think it’s a hardware failure, as there wasn’t any trace of cyan in the print head nozzle. Any suggestion for a good and reliable all in one, colour printer with supplies which are not a con? I don’t need fax, just copy, scanner and printing.

As I am no longer working and only need to print the occasional document, I get 6 months free, thereafter pay £1.99 pm for up to 50 pages but they supply the genuine HP ink. That's £24 per year. If you decide on a Laser printer…I'd never go back to an inkjet…the cost of consumables is the only factor as the Multifunction lasers all print good (I especially like the LED variants). I purchased an OKI MC342 for under 300, just as it was going out of production. The toner for it is about £29 for 2 large blacks and 3 colours. 1 set lasts over 1500 pages. I've been so pleased with the OK if I needed a replacement I would happily buy a NOS one. Mine is about 6 years old I think and still going strong. It's critical to check the cost of compatible toner and choose the printer to suit that be it Brother, Kyocera, HP Lexmark etc..
