Flat vs Conical grinder?

Anyone running a conical grinder and a flat burr grinder?

I currently have a Lagom P64, love it, great single doser, no waste/retention, 64mm ssp burrs…….
but, I’m curious…..curious of bigger flats and even more on Conicals?

any insight from anyone?

I also run a P64 with SSP HU burrs.
I drink mainly med/med-dark brewed in a Bianca or CT1.
I also have an HG1 V01.0 that I am working on (83mm Mazzer conical burrs).
I fear that the burrs are bgugered as it is very hard to grind.
I’ll probably turn it into a Weber Key copy with new burrs and a WUG motor kit later this year.

For my tastebuds I see no need for a larger flat grinder.

Bigger flats give more clarity,

I’ve been moving burr sets around recently,

SSP 83mm Hu give me a sweet cup, more pronounced acidity in a nice way

Stock mazzer tin burrs give what I’d class as a more balanced cup, with good separation

The niche while giving a nice cup compared to the 83mm mazzer it just feels more muddled.

I do find myself moving off light stuff, I’m a more medium type of guy I think.

Cuprajake Do you find yourself still using the niche at all for filter/pourover? Just ordered one and I’m worried.

Saw that Brian Quan really like the Kafatek MC5 with those Shurikones burr. Anyone here who tried it out? Maybe we should hope it catches tompoland interest so we can get some good comparisons! 🙂

hi,

i dont actually do that much pour over, but when i do i use the niche,

the mazzer is espresso through and through, even more so when i have the ssp in it,

just replied to the other thread, do sweat it, just enjoy it.

I use the Mazzer Super Jolly for the cafetière and Chemex. It seems to work well. Niche for espresso only, simply because I don’t like changing the settings. Haven’t tried using the Niche for pour over though, so I can’t compare.

I briefly played with 64mm SSP HU burrs. Nothing conclusive and not enough done with them. Earlier I looked at comments from people who go for made to order grinders.

I’ve been running the Eureka Oro SD alongside a bambino plus for a number of months. I’ve been very satisfied with the milk drinks (the bambino really is a great little machine if used within its limits) but I’ve always found the espresso straight too bright, too acidic. This is with well developed espresso blends too. The acidity wasn’t exactly sour but just too much to be really enjoyable. Messing around with grind and yield etc did not really make much difference. A week or so ago I decided to use my JX Pro hand grinder which has 48mm conical burrs, dialled into the same dose, time and yield and I’ve been enjoying espresso straight ever since. I have speculated that for my own tastes, the conical “muddiness” is actually having a positive result by dialling down the acidic end of the flavour spectrum to give a more rounded experience. And in doing so, I can actually pick out the tasting notes which I could not do with the overbearing acidity produced by the Oro SD.

I now have a Niche in transit…

Too strong for me so I always make americano and the notes can be tasted. Some people who drink espresso add water to open the flavours out - as they put it
