We have a bean to cup at work, and up until very recently I really enjoyed the coffee made from it. However, I got an espresso machine now which makes coffee much nicer tasting. Not saying that the coffee is awful from work, but I'm struggling to enjoy it like I used to. Would it work if I were to make an espresso from my machine at home, take it to work, and add hot water plus milk at work? Would it taste the same as having made it fresh?

I’ve done that for a while, until covid came by. Now that we are going back to the office, I have essentially succumbed to the office bean to cup machines. 🤢 I’ve tried taking the espresso neat, and also diluting it into the flask. Although it’s “ok”, it’s a far cry from a freshly brewed espresso or, if that’s your thing, a long black or americano.

What about an aeropress and grind enough for the day?

I then measure out my shot volume and add water and milk but it’s nowhere near the taste of freshly brewed, same issue everyone else on this thread are facing. Someone suggested that the ‘sweetness of the crema is lost’, maybe that’s it? I’m thinking of buying a hand grinder and bringing an aeropress in with whole beans. Keen to hear others experiences ??

I used to take my Aeropress to work before work bought the bean to cup. Perhaps I may have to reconsider that option.

DrForinor there’s another thread on here comparing a couple of hand grinders, gives good info all round. I was considering the 1Zpresso q variant reviewed by Davec and also fits inside an aeropress, would be handy for holidays/weekends away etc too

Penance What’s the difference between the two? As in what do the two models do that they differ in?

DrForinor the JX Pro has finer grind adjustment, I think 12 micron per click whereas the K is 20 micron. The K can grind fine enough but isn’t as easy to dial in. I don’t make espresso when camping so not a worry for me.

MWJB hi, actually it was comparing the revamped aergrind but there was good info in there relating to this (hopefully I’ve copied the thread link correctly below). Yes I think you’re right about q2 and espresso but I was thinking the best way out for work would be to just use an aeropress with a hand grinder

We recently got a very expensive Jura bean to cup machine at work - it’s got 2 hoppers and grinders one for normal beans and one for decaf. It was over £6k but I don’t use it - I’m not a fan of it at all.

One of our brighter colleagues filled the hopper up with instant coffee and wrecked one of the grinders which cost £140 to replace - I was surprised at how cheap the replacement grinder cost given the cost of the actual machine itself, but I think that tells you all you need to know.

I bring in my own beans and use a Knock Aergrind with an Aeropress. The Aergrind was a cosmetic 2nd - the only issue I can find with it is that the zero point is a little past zero which isn’t a problem for me at all as I’m only using it with the Aeropress. It only cost me £75 on Ebay direct from Knock themselves back in October

Decided on the 1zpresso K Max grinder. It’s larger than what I initially wanted, but I don’t want an “inferior” grinder and limit myself. I would much rather get a better grinder (better for my long term “wants”).

Tried out taking my espresso to work today. Todd was a coffee I had yesterday and really enjoyed it so thought I’ll try making it in the morning and using the espresso to make my Americano with milk at work when I’m ready.

Definitely doesn’t taste as nice as it yesterday - meaning the lack of freshness is very apparent. Not sure if it’s worth the extra hassle.

DrForinor I’ve been UNSUCCESSFULLY bringing espresso to work and topping up with hot water to make americano for the past year. Until.. just the past week! I had been making up 3 or 4 espressos, putting them in an airtight container and into fridge until next morning to go to work. I would weigh out an espresso each time and put the remaining coffee back in the fridge until next coffee time. It never tasted good, until, I decided to try putting the individual shot of espresso in to different airtight containers- gamechanger! I started using some food pots for our toddler who no longer uses them- link below. I think the trick is that you seal in the freshness and refrigerate immediately and only open then when you need it, making sure to give the container a good swirl before using as the coffee solids settle to the bottom. It seems to me that once you expose the coffee to air it oxygenates immediately and if left any time it’s useless. I even went and purchased a hand grinder so that would be able to freshly grind beans in work and aeropress but I don’t actually need to now as this newer method is working fine, it tastes great! Ah well the hand grinder is good to have too! And I can get zen with my beans😂 so, I would suggest try getting something like the below and trying it

Freeze in small leak proof containers. Straight into the fridge at work. It melts by the time I need it. Add hot water to make an Americano.

I make several espresso’s and freeze immediately. Sorry if this is obvious- I have made the mistake of pouring boiling water from the dispenser at work which completely destroys the flavour. Allow the hot water to sit for a minute.
