I thought we had a thread on white goods. I couldn’t find despite searching a lot. Anyway, our 8 years’ John Lewis condenser tumble dryer is on its’ way out. Electronics have always been a problem with this machine. Most of the functions won’t work. The door catch and hinge pins are now broken; replacement parts are in the post. We thought it is worth risking £27 pounds than shelling out £800-£900. We realise we are on a borrowed time and likely to replace it soon. There are no windows unless we open the utility door, when the machine is running. We are indifferent between condenser and heat pump versions. - Is there a preference here please ? - Bosch, LG, Samsung, Miele are popular ones. Miele is as usual on the expensive side, although the users seem to report a grinding noise in their heat pump versions. Given the current energy prices, energy efficient machine is preferred. We would appreciate any recommendations.

Don't buy hoover or Kenwood and also don't buy from Currys In march 2021 when we moved into our new house, we got a new hoover washer dryer, and a Kenwood fridge freezer. Both integrated. The fridge is rubbish, The washer makes constant beep noises the display is flashing. even with the 10yr warranty. They say we have to pay and book a repair, pay for labour, parts will be under warranty. The fridge Currys wouldn't replace in the 10 day period, they were shocking I should have pushed it further

We have a Bosch T/D thou not condensing, wife says it is excellent pos 10 yrso. Miele washing M/c and dishwasher= very pleased with both. Fridge freezer Hisense very happy with it.

The model was **John Lewis JLTDH23 8kg Heat Pump Condenser Dryer.** Now discontinued, it was an 8Kg inverter model. On mine there is a hard to find setting for dryness which you need to turn up, to ensure clothes come out dry…it has a sensor. Can't recommend enough.

We've got a Bosch condensing T/D - only three years or so in. One part replaced under warranty. No quibbles, quick and efficient. Careful of heat pump T/Ds if you don't have a well insulated warm home.

May not be helpful but drying clothes in a dryer significantly reduces the integrity/quality of clothes. I appreciate air drying comes with challenges around ventilation but it’s also free (assuming you do it when the heating is already on in Winter and outside in Summer) and doesn’t damage garments.

I've got a hotpoint condenser dryer. It's a very basic model - single dial timer - think it cost £120. Other than two replacement belts it hasn't missed a beat in the 20+ years I've had it.

If there's any warmth we use a rotary clothesl line in the garden, when there isn't they go on a clothes horse in the hall by a radiator, always dry in the morning.

It was an expensive investment and it took deliberation as Miele is not what it used to be 15 years ago with 10 year warranty. The claim is they have been stress tested for 20 years continuous use. Miele have quite serious discounts around Black Friday and Christmas, something I missed. Good luck with your next purchase.

We have a samsung fridge and found it maintains temperature better than cheaper fridges we had previously, food lasted longer and waste reduced to almost nothing. Zanussi washing machine has started to rumble so thinking about a samsung replacement if I believe what they say about invertor motors.

We had a condensing tumble dried from Bosch. After 22 years of service, I mistakenly thought it died and hastily ordered a new one from Bosch, this time with a heat pump. Then, before the new arrived I realised that I only needed to replace the plug on the old one and it was still working perfectly. We didn’t cancel the new one, and instead put the old one for free on FB. It was gone in 30 minutes, and probably still happily dries someones clothes, but for a huge amount of energy.

The new one isn’t made in Germany and will probably not last over 20 years, but it dries more clothes, loses less heat to the room, doesn’t fill the room with garment fluf, doesn’t cause condensation of water on the walls, displays how long is left for the cycle and beeps when it’s done. Most importantly, taking into account the energy it saved compared to the old one, it probably already paid for itself. I feel a little uncomfortable for the trojan hourse I gave some poor stranger.

On a completely different issue, I have a standaloan freezer from Beko in tha garage. Gave zero problems in the ~9 years we have had it.

Fixed the TD door at the cost of about £33. Replaced the broken parts 1 and 2 in the picture below.

Removing the pin and broken parts were a little harder than putting them back together. Applied a thin coat of furniture wax and hammered the pin in.

The TD is back in action. We know we are on a borrowed time. At a current fixed rate of 18.82p a kWh, we spend about £10.5 an hour of this TD running. It takes about 3 hours to dry.

LMSC No way, a tumble drier uses loads of energy. A 9kg condenser drier uses over 4 kW per load, almost 6 kW for vented and 1.5 kW for heatpump.

£1.40, £2.10 or 50p.

DavecUK The data is based on using a power consumption meter plugged to the socket and the TD running on top of it. Unless the unit is faulty, it is simple to use and runs fine.

I will pull out the meter and run for the entire duration of the load and cross check.

If you can run a 8 or 9Kg load for 52p, you have a conventional tumble drier that’s as efficient as my heatpump drier.

DavecUK I am blind and my bad! It’s a heat pump TD from JL. It is 8+ years old. The model is JLTDH19. Bizzare, the invoice clearly shows condensation TD. You are always right and no wonder my costs would be 52p.

@LMSC - for what’s worth, I just did a drying cycle with my condensing tumble dryer, a 6 year old entry level Bosh. A full load (approx. 7kg of wet laundry from the washing machine):

Took 1h20m for the “very dry option”.
It used 2,157 kWh.
