Flat burr Niche

Interesting news from iRate of the CoffeeSnobs forum (AU):

A patent design was lodged late last year by Niche that has one major change from the current Niche Zero….a flat burr set. The patent design application number is: WO 2023274895. Application was released on the WIPO website on 5th Jan this year:

Choice of burr will be interesting. Ditting, SSP, Mazzer …

Assuming its a 64mm burr, and it may not be), there are a lot of new competitors in that single dosing space. DF64 (various models), Moca SD, Timemore 064s (launching this week on Kickstarter at US$299), Acaïa/Weber, Zerno and Kopi Deva. And of course the P64 which has been around a while now.

I hope its 64mm because there can be so many burr sets that can be interchanged.

This is exactly what I first thought. Given the success of the Niche the engineer behind it obviously knows what he’s doing and the fact the patent diagram above shows two burr sets, that suggests a quality SD grinder for both brew and espresso is no mean feat.

It’ll be good to have a flat option for Niche fans though who prefer that burr type.

Looking at the designs submitted to WIPO (see link above) it may very well be that the flat burr version will use the same body as the original.

Something similar to what Sheldon as SworksDesign offers, only not an upgrade but rather a completely seperate machine: https://sworksdesign.com/Flat-Burr-Conversion-Kit-Niche-Grinder-p507175010 (only hopefully with 64mm burrs).

Interesting that a mod for the Niche “flat burr” was already on the market few months ago, curious to know how the matter will evolve.
