Can I chuck my hat into the ring? Right, first off, this is not an engineering review. I was lucky enough to be asked by Niche back in October, to accept the latest version of the Niche Duo. I had to sign an NDA and that was that. A couple of days later, a package turned up and I thought, I recognise that. On inspecting the packaging, it is quite clearly designed with the Zero experience in mind. The packaging has instructions printed on it for starters. Once you open the outer box, there is a strap/handle to help you lift the inner box meaning that you do not have to tip it upside down to force it out! I received a gleaming white model that arrived with espresso burrs fitted to it. A quick glance through the comprehensive handbook to make sure that there was nothing I needed to be aware of, and coffee here we come! When I dial in a new grinder, I always pull the first shot at whatever it arrives set to and take my reference from there. The third shot was spot on. 16 gms on an espresso setting takes me 16 seconds. I did not suffer from any static, the grounds were nice and fluffy. I believe the burrs originate from Mazzer (both espresso and brewed). Eventually, I thought it was time to try swapping the burrs over. Again, no help from Niche. They selected me as tester for their idiots instructions, and I feel well qualified for that role. I have made a video that I will post and it took me 70 seconds or so to swap over. You raise the lid, unscrew the silver dial, remove the screw to tighten down the top burr set, then remove it. Push down on the bottom burr set and remove. The process is then repeated with the brewed burrs (these are a different colour, blue) in reverse of course. I am deliberately keeping this summary vague! I have no idea as to how they get a big flat to be retention free. Having swapped the burrs over many times, and since access allows with ease, whenever I clean it out the retention is minimal. MediumRoastSteam yes and that is a big caveat. Only one way to find out.

I have the two Mazzer 151 burr sets that are coming with the Duo plus another four Mazzer 151 burr sets on the way, sourced from Australia, the UK and Italy. A bit of a mission to be honest so I hope they fit.

It’s a bit of a risk because it sounds like the Duo is quite finely engineered.

That’s partly why, with permission from James Nicolson, I bought two. One for warranty-voiding activity like seeing if a Caedo Opal Glide burr will fit, the other strictly for using the warranty-preserving burrs they come with.

So nothing new here - nicely shot video and the GS3 is cool (assuming thats the right model 😂)

But he is using the Duo and doing 2 drinks espresso and filter. I don’t think I had understood what a beast the duo is - the grind ring seemed huge when he went to change the setting.

Only odd thing was tinkering with the zero point when he put the filter burrs in - maybe he did not read the manual - unless he had been swapping burrs out of the holders ??

I would even go so far as to say, it makes things worse. He is al;so re-zeroing and moving the black ring, which is actually not necessary and just gives more work.

Cuprajake a fan of the original’s ease of calibration and glad this has kept it up.

Hard to tell from a single video but it sounds to my untrained ears like part of the burr is touching and part isn’t - I know Dave said tolerances are closer on final units but did your pre-production model come aligned and have you run any marker tests on it?

It makes me somewhat annoyed that some people receive the grinder ahead of general sales and have the ability of completely add unnecessary steps on how to use it.

In a way, it’s like spreading fake news. Oh well.

Must admit this grinder is looking very impressive. Irrespective of Sprometheus’ mistakes in the video, it’s a great video visually and I’m sure we’ll sell many units. The changing of the burr sets looks so easy.

Cap doffed to Niche. If I do decide to get a new grinder in the future, this will probably be the one. Still not a fan of how it looks…..

That’s the point of my video 😂

You align a flat burr till they slightly touch or chirp. That’s your zero point.

So the note change is where you mark zero.

And then espresso is around 4-12 depends on your bean.

Cuprajake yeah I get that and I’m saying it doesn’t sound particularly well aligned for a machine which I keep hearing has very tight tolerances…not dissimilar to the sound of an unshimmed df64. Your videos was about calibration being good out of the box but I’m asking if you’ve checked alignment.

I don’t know what you think you’re hearing but it’s not burrs touching. It may be the motor.

From the 0point to espresso at 6 is 72micorns.

Yeah that’s why I prefaced it with ‘hard to tell but..’, it didn’t sound like a longer more continuous chirp which I’d expect from such a well aligned machine. 😆 However the marker swipe is pretty impressive for factory alignment that’s for sure.
