Thanks for all the great info in this thread! I have a Niche Duo arriving tomorrow and the info here + @Cuprajake’s contributions over at HB were part of what convinced me to grab it.
I jumped into espresso in late 2021 with a Rancilio Sylvia Pro and a Sette 270WI. The Sette has certainly gotten the job done, but I’ve grown really dissatisfied with its propensity to not hold its grind very well. I’ve had issues with two units now, both of which have experienced some slipping issues on the macro adjustment wheel even after replacing the small ball bearings designed to hold it into place. I’ve also wanted to get away from keep beans in the hopper, but have had consistency issues with single dosing.
The Niche Duo looks absolutely perfect for an upgrade. Part of me wanted to save for a Monolith, but I think that’s likely more grinder than my machine or palate knows what to do with at this point. The Duo with both burrs fits our typical coffee setup perfectly, as my wife and I tend to do 95% espresso and then a bit of pour over brewing when guests are at the house. To me the burr swapping looks so simple that it’ll be a welcome inconvenience to save counter space on the rare occasions we’re doing coffee instead of espresso. I’m really looking forward to hopefully having a consistent grinder where I can find a good setting for whatever I’m pulling and not have as much waste due to variance like I’ve experienced with the Sette.
Will report back on how the grinder does once I have it in hand tomorrow! First time on a flat burr setup and thrilled to be able to start tinkering with it.
