I seem to dip in and out of coffee, for probably the last 5-6 years I’ve been in basically a standstill, with my Quickmill Andreja Premium and Mazzer Mini E, happy under my rock :) I’ve now got a new machine and was thinking of a new grinder and it suddenly occurred to me… Does no-one own Mazzer Mini’s any more?! :D I first got in to coffee “proper” (I think?) probably around 2005 with the purchase of a Rancilio Silvia and my first Mazzer Mini E and I remember thinking crikey this is proper kit! Obviously time has most likely moved on now but it got me wondering if anyone still uses them?

And Hasbean, they seemed to be popular back then, at least I think it was that far back! And the roast and post coffee company!

I suspect its just the explosion of choice - the take up of single dosers and the drop in the price of entry. i have looked at Mazzers (alot have been for sale on here) - I did buy the hand grinder 😂 - but in my case the size / noise and workflow seemed to rule them out, If you are happy with your grinder I dont see there is a need to change it 👍

@"MattH"#p42552 to be fair I’m fairly sold on getting a single dosing grinder. Back when I got the Andreja and the second Mazzer about 6 years ago I think the niche was just coming out. In fact I seem to recall the conversations someone had with the niche creators, there was a big thread on (I think) CFUK (I seemed to also miss it on all that drama!!) and I remember thinking the Niche looked awesome but I didn’t want to spend that much. But yeh, I think I fancy something single dose, that way can swap between beans a bit more. I think I will always have fond memories of the Mazzer though :)

I’m very similar! Got into coffee around 2000, enjoyed the third-wave boom living in London and have very fond memories of some of the now huge East London shops opening in the late 00s. When Shoreditch Grind was just a little circular building on (a very very different) Old St roundabout. Almost every shop had a Linea and a couple of Super Jolly’s usually painted in their colours We had a Mazzer Mini Doser and big old Gaggia commercial machine at the design agency i was working at and I learned to make espresso from a colleague. We didn’t weigh anything, just fill the basket, and hit the double button on the machine! To me this is what I still love about making/drinking espresso. A mix of nostalgia, efficiency and great coffee. I have no interest in portioning out single doses, freezing beans or 0.1g of retention. I buy a coffee I like the sound of, dump a bit in the hopper each day and work my way through a bag. For that reason single dosing grinders haven’t appealed to me but in the coffee community I’d say I’m now in the minority. The Niche changed the landscape significantly and for people who want to swap beans often and grind as fresh as possible, there’s still nothing better anywhere near the price point. Also to me I just like how older coffee stuff looks. Mazzer, MK, Faema etc. I’m not really a fan of the space-age styling of a lot of the progressive equipment. If you don’t mind the looks and want to try single dosing, the Niche is the way to go. Whenever there the words "single dose grinder" are in the question, the word "niche" in normally in the answer. And probably for good reason. The Zero surely has to be the go-to single dose conical burr grinder for many. So well designed and so well made. And favorably priced to boot. As to single dosing flats, the answer will probably still have the word "niche" included but possibly now followed by the word "Duo". I'm still quite enthralled with the little Swiss Miss (Olympia Moca SD) with its 64mm Ditting flat burrs, but at around another 50% on top of the price of a Duo with its double set of Mazzers, I suspect that the gauntlet will be well and truly thrown down.

you can single dose the mazzer, theres just a bit more faff to it, the new single dose grinders in general bring better workflow and easier grind adjustment, the mazzers dont always like to be adjusted on that ring haha

I've pretty much been single dosing for almost 20 years, I started it with the Mazzer Mini E. **I'd realised back then** that the limitations of hopper fed for me were: * difficulty getting a consistent weight * beans staling in the hopper * inconsistency of grind * crushed beans in the breaker zone staling fast (not actually cleared by a 2-3g purge * Purging 3g or old coffee every grind (unless it was one after the other) was annoying * more difficult to "chase a grind setting" * the real faff of single dosing. So the Niche and subsequent crop of single dosing grinders were a joy for me to see. I believe it's changed the prosumer grinder market fundamentally. It was a market that manufacturers didn't take seriously. Now they realise there are a lot of us and there is a great deal of money to be made by giving us decent products.

RDT, WDT, whatever-else-DT? :) I'm halfway between I think, I like to be precise so I try, but then sometimes I just don't bother and I love just winging it!
