I’ve had 2 of these coffees, I didn’t think they were light. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the Jeremiah Cordoba.

If the YH stands for yellow honey, I only tried the red honey.

Why are the ground values so much higher than wholebean? I thought the expressed value related to the ground samples?

Are these figures from Crankhouse?

I thought it was when light roasted the internal was lighter than the outer so I’d lightens the ground Vs bean colour?

Cuprajake Agtron say that the difference can indicate how even the roast, but it’s the ground value that is typically quoted, e.g. 65 medium light, 75 light, 85 very light.

In simple terms, the Agtron is used to classify coffee roast and determine the roast consistency.

It uses near infrared light to analyse the color of ground or whole bean coffee. It will then give a numerical (whole) value, which represents the degree of roast. The lower the number, the darker the roast.

There are no industry accepted standards to determine the roast. Some roasters may use Agtron, some their own and different colour readers. It is an expensive piece of kit, which we may find only amongst the big roasters.

Yes! Roast and consistency. Have a read, if you have time.

Many devices achieve the same purpose. You get an idea of of what your roast is. Eventually, the taste buds are what matters. 😊

These devices can also impacted by calibration inconsistencies between them. Like our shots, there are many moving parameters.

Would be great to see some kind of industry standard that’s affordable for all roasters to use/implement.

Exactly, most of the devices can only give the whole bean unless one has a sophisticated equipment.

I see it more as a value add of I want to buy just light and medium light.

It’s all relative, tbh. Varies between roasters, let alone the consumers. Difficult to get an acceptable standard.

And you just need to look at supermarket beans Vs an independent roaster to see how a medium roast can massively vary. Most medium supermarket beans are very oily and are probably darker than almost anything you can buy from an independent.
