Pompeyexile One of the things I found amazing was the drip oiler, literally hundreds of steel tubes running to every bearing in the machine….some tubes are a few feet long others run to the base of the machine snaking down at least 40 feet.
each one of those drip oilers was pulled out just enough to give the right amount of oil for that particular bearing/size bearing. Quite amazing when you think about it. There were the internals as well, which I forgot to take photos of, because I was just trying to take all the engineering in…but they were clever buggers back in the 1920s.
When you stand next to something running weighing 1000 tons and that size, it’s awe inspiring and quite something. The 2 engines are similar to those used in Titanic. Each flywheel is 32 tons but made in two 16 ton halves, pinned together, this allowed rail carriages to transport them and the crane in the building to lift and move them the length of the building.
