I figured we must have a good cross section of whisky lovers.

So, current regular tipple? Favourite special one? Bottle you’d like to try? Any recommendations?

For me I’m really enjoying the Old Puteney 12yo as a regular; it costs around £21-25 a bottle which lasts [me] a month. Slightly cheaper than the coffee habit!

capuchin - I love whisky - however a I don’t tend to buy a bottle to keep at home because I know that, if I have a bottle… it will be drunk over a couple of weeks. So I deliberately don’t buy it.

When I do, I tend to stick with the £25-£35 range. Usually on a deal. Aberlour 12yo is one of my favourites, and tend to favour single malts from Highlands and Islay.

Tend to look out for what’s on offer. Got a bottle of Aberlour Casg Annamh - triple cask aged on the go - smooth as silk. Few others on the go - Highland Park - not too peaty, Glenfarclas - easy going Speyside malt, Singleton also a Speyside and Lagavulin when I am feeling brave - smokey iodine notes by the barrelful. Also really like Springbank - triple distilled - very delicate but pricey.

I’m keen to get more into Scotch but I’m a big bourbon fan.

Eagle Rare is the one I’ve usually got in the cabinet.

King’s County do an incredible whiskey although not technically bourbon as it’s distilled in New York. Tin Cup is another ‘not technically bourbon but enjoyable’ one.

You are lucky! Saves you a lot of money, and you don’t have to worry about how to get to places or how to head back if you are having an alcoholic drink.

Yeah, and the hangovers!

As I get older I find I can’t have more than one or two in an evening if I want to be at all productive the next day.

Possibly sacrilegious to mention in a Whisky thread but I’m very partial to a Kentucky Mule - Bourbon, ginger beer and a lime wedge.

Systemic In the Springbank “group” only Hazelburn is triple distilled. Springbank/Kilkerran/Longrow/Hazelburn are my go-to bottles if I can get them - a couple of years ago I could walk into my local and bottles were always on the shelf. Now you are lucky to get anything as for most allocations shops now have a lottery type system so it’s luck of the draw really for you to get a bottle. Even the shop local to me, I know the owner well, and he cannot keep aside bottles for me anymore…the demand is just too high. Sadly the majority of the rarer bottles are destined for auction. I miss the days when I could just walk into a shop and buy a Springbank 12 cask strength - that’s just impossible now.

So other than Springbank my current favourite distillery is Laphroaig - the new Cairdeas is a cracker imo.

Scotch Whiskey was my teen hang-over drink and I avoided it for a long time.
I went through a stage where I followed my favourite author (Iain Banks) and his book “Raw Spirit” and tried lot of different whiskeys.
My favourite is still an Irish, Jameson Black Barrel.

A greasy Islay is ok when I am feeling maudlin or a Dalwhinnie is always nice but not cheap.

I rarely drink whisky but when I do it’s Johnnie Walker Black label, J&B or Black Bush. I’ve tried with single malts but they don’t really do it for me. Truth be told I’d rather have a pink gin.

My elderly neighbour went on holiday to Pitlochry, and on his return dropped me in a bottle of Glenfairn single malt. I had to thank him enthusiastically and make up the taste as I do not drink! I am not sure why he thought that I did, except I think there is a popular misconception that surely everyone drinks!

I don’t drink Alcohol at all any more…but when I used to have a tipple now and again, Whisky wasn’t one of my favourites. In fact I didn’t really drink spirits much at all.

I’m drinking Glen Moray a Speyside single malt at the moment given to me for a birthday present from a friend who used to be in the wine whiskey business and he knows his stuff. It is very smooth and a bit fruity just as the distillers decribe it and I LIKE IT!

A sip of Highland or Speyside single malt after dinner with a good movie is always something we like with my wife. I would say we are well loaded but rarely drink it. Usually 12y is the natural choice but on occasions we can indulge with a bit more aged 15 or 18y.
Some Japanese 12y are also very good, the irony is they import the water from Scotland. So much about Japanese perfection 😀.

I know it is not on topic, but a good cognac is also on our list. Despite what it might sound like, in fact we do not drink much, but we enjoy a classy drink, whence the coffee machine😃

Near where my son lives there’s an indie wine shop with a fantastic selection of whiskies. Asked what I like and mentioned Springbank and could they get it. Guy said they had some at the back but couldn’t sell it as they hadn’t been told the price which I found really funny.

My father in law liked whisky and way back bought him a bottle of 25 yr old Macallan - which, I believe, was fully sherry cask aged. Whilst finding it smooth as silk, I got hints of muskiness which put me off. Fast forward to now and Macallan is eye wateringly expensive. That said, my son bought me a bottle of 25 yr old Glenfarclas to celebrate a key birthday after I told him I’d visited the distillery decades ago in the winter and, with a friend, were the only people visiting the distillery at the time. After being shown around, we were given the customary dram. Told the guide I’d read the 15 yr old ‘went down singing hymns’. He reached under the counter and brought out a bottle with no label on it and poured some. It was amazing. I asked him how old it was but he wouldn’t tell me.

Some Scotch is absolutely nuts in price. Macallan 50 is like 60 grand.

I think some people invest in it as wasting assets.

Systemic That indie shop is telling you porkies lol. They all will get price lists along with the recommended retail price, way before they get the stock…unless the delivery had literally come in 5 minutes before you went in and they had not got around to sorting it all out yet, which is highly unlikely. Sadly, many shops do not sell at the RRP but the retailers know it will sell, even at inflated prices. Never really got into Macallan - from what I have read the quality of the casks they use is not quite what it used to be, say 30-40 years ago. And, their bottles are just too expensive, for me anyway. I have a soft spot for Glenfarclas - the 15 year old is my favourite core range bottling from them.

I’ve normally got somewhere between 40 and 50 bottles of single malt on the go.

I think the best bang per buck is Naked Grouse, or as it’s now called Naked Malt.

It’s around the £22 mark , a blend of sherried malts , lovely jubbly.

Macallan pricing is bonkers, I think I’ve 3 bottles at the mo, all gifts but absolutely no better than any other Spreyside IMO. Owned by the Edrington group who also own Famous Grouse and Highland Park. They can sell everything they bottle so can drive the price.
