This link describes the various types of bases available from Reg Barber Types of Tamper Bases

Feel free to both vote and explain why you prefer the base that you voted for.

I currently use a flat 58.5 mm base that is 7.5mm thick, from Eazytamp. I’ve only ever had flat bases, so I do not know whether another type would serve me better.

Cant say I currently have a preference but I’m being sent an auto tamper with a ripple base which is alleged to improve extraction levels, and yes, better flavor too. I’ll give it a test in the grinder lab against my standard flat base Malwani tamper.

I have a convex Torr and a flat Bravo. I like both of them.

I’ve never used anything but a flat base, however having just done a Google I have seen normcore sell all the bases with shipping only $10 - somewhat tempting to experiment.

    Flat.

When I tried rippled, it just made a mess

Decent De1pro v1.45 - Niche Duo - Niche Zero - Decent is the best machine ever made -

I have a convex Torr and several flats. I use the convex most of the time. I reckon the result is more forgiving than the flats.

Yeah convex in theory will push more grinds to the edge stop the doughnut effect.

While the doughnut doesn’t really do much

Good to see some more convex fans!

Hoping Torr get theirs back in stock very soon.

Old post but how did you go with this Tom?
Am looking at the Normcore v4 Titanium spring loaded tamper but not sure whether to get flat base or rippled base

drdre89 the supplier went quiet on me so it never happened. Thanks for the reminder, I’ll give him a nudge.

He imports them but was extolling the virtues (more flavor) of ripple based tampers well before he started importing the auto tampers.

I’d try the normcore except spring loaded tampers mess with my arthritic wrist. (The wrist is 99% pain free as long as don’t subject it impact such as occur with say hammering or spring loaded tampers.)
