I had long thought of, since getting the Evo, having a dedicated thread to share my coffee experience. The laziness got the better off me. I also didn’t have much recounting the journey stories like experienced folks like Dave, dfk41, Systemic, MRS, Jake and many more. Jake’s recording of his journey is beautiful. With the duo due to be delivered soon, it’s about time I take a leaf out of Jake’s and have a thread sharing the user experience of using the Duo the way it was originally meant to be and designed for. Swapping the burrs seem to be quick and easy. Can one really integrate it as a part of a daily routine? Or, would it become a faff over time - what ever may be the reason ? I make 3 espressos in the morning for 3 and at least a filter or two for self during the day. There may or may be any decaf espressos in the evening. I think users like self are perfect candidates for the duo. I have every intentions of swapping the burrs - there is no reason not to otherwise. It remains to be seen if I will enjoy using the dual burrs daily or get bored swapping daily after the honeymoon period - 3 months! I will post my views as I experience it. There will not be any reviews or comparisons for three reasons. 1) I can’t be asked, 2) Tom, I am sure, will do the honours as usual and 3) I can’t afford to buy :-) I do want to know how I will like the espresso (taste wise) from JX pro vs the duo. I mostly drink medium light / light. I take full 2 mins to grind 17g. One thing for sure is I won’t be missing the hand-grinding part! 😁 More later!

cant wait for you to get hands on, its about time they hit the hands of more real world users, im sure you will love the grinder, im finding 6 to be a good starting point with beans for espresso and then 30-40 range with filter, which i dont drink alot of tbh,

I think Niche suggest this, but if you can, once unboxed, leave it to come to room temp which takes an hour or so. If you touch it, it will be freezing cold which is just a by product of the delivery system……enjoy matey!

You will find that while waiting for the kettle to boil, you can swap the burrs, why not to get extra good filter as opposed to just using the espresso burrs.

Mine has arrived. I ground approx 200g of old beans through before attempting my first filter.

#31 equates to 12% kruve 400 for me (albeit a sample size of 1!).

The filter this produced is definitely different to my zero. Most notably there is no dryness in the finish and cooled it is still interesting/tasty.

I also attempted to grind some old beans using the espresso burrs and encountered a problem:

The old/cheap beans were quite dark and I think I had the grind too fine (setting 5). As a result the grinds became peanut-butter like and covered the cutting surfaces of the burrs leading to no more grinding! It took a while to remove the coffee-butter from the burrs with a toothpick (it was welded on) but it is now back to normal.

I havent made a classic espresso shot yet. #10 produced a complete choke (which probably explains why #5 wasnt a successful experience!). #15 produced a 17s gusher so the working range seems much smaller and less forgiving than the NZ. Taste wise the gusher shot was amazingly clean and floral/fruity.

Yes. This is a fact, somewhat already documented here. My first gusher yesterday 18g in, 50g in 20s. A change of 1.5 marks finer then resulted in a shot taking 40s for the same weights. On the NZ I would have gone 3 marks finer to try and get a 32-35s shot.

Are they medium / medium dark ? I think darker beans may produce more fines.

Coffee from Kenya tend to be easily soluble, likely to require a bit of a coarser grind for espresso and may get larger % of fines. I also think processing methods could make a difference.

What are those sift percentages of 30s, 40s and 50s ? The 50s may be on the weaker side.

I have done 10 brews (light and medium light) of 10 different bags each. I am now confident that my grind references are good in my case. Here are the averages so far!

Avg: 8.4% is 9% Kruve 400 & 11.9% is 12% Kruve 400
SD : 0.58% (9% Kruve 400) & 0.68% 12% Kruve 400

I don’t like brewing anything above medium light. 😊

Edit : 9% Kruve 400 is #31 on the Duo and #17 in the case of 12% Kruve 400.

I will sift some proper coffee over the coming days and see how it compares.

I started on 31 from reading your posts, and upon seeing my result I just went up and down the grind scale in 10s.

not sure, but it’s definitely not 111. It’s a food safe grease that I believe is also used in the gearbox….I have a pot at home, taken from a larger container. I will try and have a look next time there is an opportunity.

I sifted some Foundry Rocko Mountain. #31 got me 9.3% < Kruve 400 so much more in line with you. Will continue to keep an eye on this as everything gets more use.

Day 29 is another “no filter coffee” day, which is second day in a row.

I am running a low-stock on light / medium light coffee.

Two 150g tins from Crankhouse - Potosi XO Natural and Jhoan Vergara are still resting. One from Foundry (Sebastian Gomez) and two filter from Cartwheel Teofilo and Yukro are in the post. I am rationing Dog n Hat’s Tim Wendelboe until then.

Dog and Hot international filter is due to arrive next week. Hopefully, this won’t disappoint like those Spanish offerings.

Elsewhere, my MIL is enjoying North Star’s Brazil, while my wife said it isn’t as good as Blackcat’s and Foundry coffee - both are bright and complex. I am hoping she will like the Foundry’s Sebastian Gomez.

The Potosi is amazing and a rare coffee where it actually tastes strongly like the flavour notes. I found this especially true by adding a small amount of milk.
