Swiss Gold Questions...

I bought a Swiss Gold filter just because I wanted to see if it really made a difference whe using my Clever Dripper or Moccamaster and when I opened it, well…it isn’t gold.

All the ones I have seen on YouTube etc were actually gold in colour. So, were they originally coated in gold and as the new ones seem not to be, does or would that make a difference to what they claime i.e Swiss Gold ‘for a better taste’. Also, can’t they be done by trades descriptions if there is no gold or….is the coating now white gold.🤑

One other thing… Do any of you use one and if so, do you also put a paper filter in first too, which I have heard some people do… and isn’t that defeating the object? Or is it to stop the possibility of any sediment, but again wouldn’t that effect the taste?

Oh, and what about grind size? Different than if using just a paper filter?

Questions, questions…..As you can see I have far too much time on my hands.😉

Pompeyexile I used to have a plastic version made by melitta to go in their cone. I always felt that the plastic mesh used to give a lot of sediment, even though it was very, very fine. To be honest, I think filter papers probably work better.

It seems many companies that were selling gold tone filters (yes, they were gold in the past) have switched to a silver metal. No idea why, but Bodum as well as Swissgold.

For Clever, always use it with a paper filter too, you’re just using the metal filter to speedup draw down & further reduce sediment with the paper filter. No need to change grind size over the paper filter setting.

Don’t know about Moccamaster, go by how much sediment you detect.

I tried these many years ago. While I did not then have the coffee knowledge and experience that I do now, I recall that it let too many fines through with a resultant fairly muddy taste. I stopped using it. Its still burried in my cupboard, but I don’t have an inclination to use it.

Fyi, I’ve also used a cloth filter cone, which filters more or less as well as paper, but I more than suspect that it retains compounds that affect taste. And they become quite dirty looking over time. I’ve stopped using those as well.
