Ocado have stopped selling V60 papers, so as I needed to go online to buy some more, I picked up a Switch at the same time. What methods are people using (grind size recommendations much appreciated - I have Niche Zero, Wilfa flat, Comandante X25 & Ode V1.1).

@"wintoid"#p52910 Cheers, 10g dose at 16 on the X25, 157g in, 130g out resulting in a pleasant, well extracted cup (1.53%TDS). A bit more mouthfeel than a drip brew, but not necessarily a bad thing (buttery, rather than grainy).

Just curious. What is the difference between a Clever Dripper and a Hario Switch? In operation? In taste profile? I was thinking of getting one or the other, but not both. What are the pros and cons of each? Btw, the Clever is a bit too large for my liking, and I just can't find the small size here in Canada.

So I've just done a small Clever brew, same parameters as the Switch: Comandante X25 at 16, 10g coffee, 160g (+/-) water in in 15 or so sec, steep til 2:00, 3x back & forth stirs, draw down at 2:15. Extractions were comparable at 1.53% TDS for the Switch & 1.52% for the Clever, Clever brew had couple of g more water. Draw down was 47s on the Switch, 112s on the Clever. The Clever cup was nowhere near as clean, more swampy/pithy, I subjectively scored a 5/9 compared to 7/9 for the Switch. Bear in mind, this is not my typical method for the Clever, just a direct comparison between the 2 brewers, my normal Clever methods tend to produce better cups than this (no lower in preference than any other dialled in method). You wouldn't keep making sub standard cups on the Clever, just so that you didn't have to change method between them. Pros: Clever requires no switching, this is done automatically by placing the brewer on a cup. Clever's plastic handle is always cool to the touch. (No handle on the Switch cone section, but the base is rubbery/silicone). Switch has the ability to use different size glass V60 & Mugen cones on the same base. Cons: Steeps in the Clever can have a plasticky taint (always has on & off)…as my Switch is new I can't say how this will be affected in the future. I'd really just go for the Switch as long as V60 papers are easy to source where you live.

One set at 90, one at 70. But I’m on the spectrum so for the less annaly retentive (my wife’s assessment), turning the dial down to 70 and quickly pouring cold water into the kettle after the second pour works surprisingly well.

But once I repeated it 7 or so times, I could do it in my sleep.

Cuprajake OK try a couple of marks coarser (my draw downs are around 40-50s).

You have a funny hump in the middle of the bed? When you stir at 4:00 it’s just at the surface to sink anything floating, like when cupping, you don’t need to create a vortex.

Have never seen such a fine grind at #17 on Duo after brewing 28 different coffee bags. The average 12% 400 Kruve is 11.7% with a standard deviation of 0.54%.

FWIW on my Duo with filter burrs I’m usually around 30 for Switch brews. No science there, just what has worked for me.

Brewed the KTH Nziza at 9% 400 Kruve using 15g coffee and 215g water. Brewed for 4 mins and gently stirred the surface at 4 mins and drained on a pre-heated cup at the 5th min.

Like the morning 12% 400 Kruve, there were no obvious tasting notes that came on top, although had hints of orange acidity at the middle. Like V60 12%, it had a cocoa finish, which wasn’t there on the bag. 7/9 is the score.

Tried this recipe this morning in the larger Switch. Big plus for this method is you can brew more than the full capacity of the Switch. Dosed 30 grms to 500 grms water. Ground coarsish - 250 grms in with the valve open then closed at 45 secs with the remainder of water. Draw down was around 3 mins.

Bean tasting notes were orange blossom, rose water, mint and florals. Not been picking much up via Chemex but the above method really delivered. Was under-impressed with the beans until this brew.

Didn’t refract as I was in a hurry but will post some results when I have time.

Today’s Switch was 30.5 grms to 505 grms water. Grind for straight V60 - 12 on the EKs. First pour 250 grms with the valve open - completed in 35 secs and left until one minute mark then valve closed and remainder of water added. Left to steep for one minute then draw down which completed in a total time of 2 mins 50 secs. Extraction yield was 21.1%.

Really like this method as you get the bright notes of pour over with mouthfeel of a steep method. There are endless permutations - increase the pour over element at the expense of the steep or vice versa.

Brew just now with same parameters came out 21.5% EY with a new bean. Going to shorten the steep time next brew and see what difference that makes on the extraction yield.

Systemic If the new bean is a more soluble origin, (e.g. Kenya, Ethiopia, Peru) you may not need to tweak unless you’re also getting flattened acidity and generic over-extracted notes?

+/- 0.4%EY with the same bean over 10 brews would be good consistency, different beans for each brew more like +/-0.9%EY.
