IMS precision basket for 54 mm portafilter

Hello everyone

I have a Sage barista express and so far have been pulling espresso shots using the baskets that came with the machine.

Having done a liitle bit of research on potential upgrades, I have been ‘convinced’ that a precision basket will improve the quality of the coffee I am making and is overall a good investment. Hence I am leaning towards buying a IMS basket (18-22 gr) which will be combatible with my machine’s 54 mm portafilter. I usually prepare shots with 19 gr of coffee, and I think that I have managed to find the correct settings to pull a good shot for the blend I am currently using.

Would you recommend bying it?
If the new basket offers an improved ‘flow’, will this significantly affect the shot parameters compared to the ones with the current Sage basket?

ChristosC I am neither a super taster nor aspire to be one. My Evo came when a stock double basket. Dosing 18g would only fill the basket to half.

I bought the IMS 26 because I did not want to deal when a half-filled stock basket. The 26 addresses this problem. This old man did not find any difference.

Some find an improved cup and many don’t find any difference. Dave is a super taster. I do not think he would say it would!

So, it’s not worth a bother, IMO. But, hey, it’s not expensive and you may want to experiment it yourself! 😊

It sounds like a low-risk investement compared to those 500£ grinders I am envying, so I may still buy it🧐

For BE I have not sensed a lot of difference in taste and it made pucks a bit more muddy and needing more cleaning at the end of the shot. But you should probably get one and experiment if you plan to keep your machine for longer time. In case you were wondering IMS B62.52TH28E is the basket that fits BE.

Yes, I thought that the wet/ soggy puck might be an issue, as I usually start with 19 gr in the basket. Will give it a try nevertheless.

I am not big fan of IMS. I didn’t love it on my previous machine.

Now i testing to use lever with it, but i find the same difficulty previous, for me the coffee loses of consistency, become fluid and light. (the taste will be little more deep but i am interessed an average of all factors )

IMO the precision basket could be produce better results only if you have an excellent prepartion tecnique, overdose it for compensate an poor tecnnique is not the solution.
