I sold the Duo BUT im considering using the Key for my wife’s decaf so lets see!!.

@Raja123 has loaned me some ssp to try in the philos, arriving today, as im interested to see how they compare to the 2 sets of mazzer burrs i have.

Depending on how that goes i still may be selling if my wife likes the Key. Obviously i like the Flat Max (even if i didnt!!).

Let us know how the SSP burrs go.

I’ve no interest in changing as I really like the I200 burrs but I’m more curious as to whether other burrs work well in them.

Adrianmsmith no hurry mate. Just watched a video this morning with the philos and the SSP burrs, I usually drink Medium dark roast so no notable changed to the 189 burrs but apparently the 200 style give more.

I must admit I’m surprised how much scepticism there is over the Philos in general and lack of uptake. Sure there’s a lot of positive feedback but it hasn’t quite been a smash hit.

It’s odd to me that these no-name brands pop up and generate so much hype online yet when one of the oldest (the oldest?) names in grinders makes a single doser it launches to more of a golf clap than widespread buzz. Granted it’s not a cheap bit of kit but it’s hardly priced at the top-end of the market.

It’s a shame really, I still think it’s an absolute treat of a grinder, if not only to use the fantastic 200D burrs in the grinder they were designed to be in.

HarveyMushman I think the question I asked myself, was what new does it bring to the table. It is using a size of burrs where the market is saturated. Mazzer make a vast range of burrs but I think they have been a bit safe and samey by choosing 64mm. Personally, I would either have used a larger size or gone the whole hog and designed a new unique burr.

Yeah I agree an 83 would’ve been nice. And it’s definitely a very saturated market.

HarveyMushman honestly even 83 is getting to be pretty saturated now, 80 would be the size to get enthusiasts excited - without straying into silly sizes of course 😁

While the 1k mark was lower than many were expecting for Mazzer it just isn’t competitive price for a big mass produced 64mm grinder at all. Zerno costs more in the UK yes but the fact it’s got this reputation for being small, handmade, low volume, high tolerance and constantly tweaked in reaction to feedback is what makes it worth the extra for those already spending alot on a grinder. Its limited availability helps too of course.

If I ran a cafe I’d rather have the Philos over it no question though..

He gave it 5 out of 5 for value…….yes it’s beautiful to look at and I would love one myself, but it’s 3 times the price I’ve paid for a DF64 with SSP burrs and honestly wouldn’t say it’s price point is 5/5 for value 🤷‍♂️

As a multipurpose grinder I can see the value. It replaced the three grinders I was using prior (Super Jolly, Fellow Ode 2 and MK x54) so good value in that sense.

But yeah, as a 64mm espresso only grinder it’s a pricey option for sure.

Yeah true. Barely any of the influencer set have covered it. I noticed even Hoffman is using the Zerno. Another relatively unknown manufacturer yet enormously hyped. People were already saying the Zerno was better than the Philos before they’d even used either.

Admittedly it looks good and seems pretty well reviewed but it’s insanely expensive to get hold of in the UK, even if you can get one due to waitlists and popularity, which goes back to my point above.
