If only I could roast a larger capacity… I'm currently roasting two of the exact same coffees as NewGround and judging by the tasting notes I'm guessing they're roasting it to a pretty light level. Obadiah are on the light end, great group of people as well. They just upgraded their roaster so they may have shifted styles a little since I last purchased from them. Sweven are light but also tend to only stock pricier coffees depending on how much you are willing to spend. The cata project espresso blend was superb when I had it at lowdown coffee, generally they pull closer to turbo shots

@"Inspector"#p62040 Getting into lighter roasts was one of my biggest reasons to start roasting. Many decent med/med-dark roasts can easily be had for £20-25 a kilo but lighter SO’s quickly become pretty pricey as you noted.

@"MediumRoastSteam"#p62031 Really? I've had one or two slightly darker roasts but everything else has been well and truly light. I've not loved everything I've had from them but it's good value(with frequent discounts) and has a good variety, plus I like being able to order 500g

I’ve been buying from Coffeelink for the last few months, decent prices perennial discounts and no postage costs, well obviously it’s on the price of the beans but the coffee is good, at the moment we’re going through a Peru phase and I’d say the beans are a bit bland but then I drink my coffee with milk but my wife takes her’s black with a dash of milk and she likes the coffee too.

They have plenty of so called light roasts I’ve tried a few of them and they’re good I think.

Twotone2 the problem with coffeelink is the consistency. One batch is great and next time you order it is over roasted.

I’d be very wary of UK retailers selling coffee from overseas, generally my experiences have been rather disappointing in this respect (but not much better than buying direct from the US, for instance).

Normally I’d agree as I have had some bad experiences buying even from EU roasters but NewGround are first-rate. I visit their roastery pretty often and they really care about the coffee so wouldn’t be selling duff bags.

They usually do cupping sessions with their guest coffees also and limit the supply so you’re only getting it as fresh as possible and not something that’s 3 months old.

The Sey I have from NewGround is 6 weeks past roast, I wouldn’t really expect that to be an issue, but the coffee is certainly lacking. Maybe it’s the commercially compostible packaging, maybe it’s something associated with the logistics of sending coffee by air accross the Atlantic.

I was waiting for a reply from NewGround regarding Sey’s poor packaging, I wasn’t going to mention the coffee quality to them & just put it down to experience as I have with £100+ worth of US coffee I binned last year. But you have forced my hand here with respect to this thread.

That’s really surprising. Given it’s quite simple these days to get stuff shipped UK > US within 48 hours these days it’s a shame they’ve got coffee 6 weeks after roasting. I’m guessing the cost has put people off and they haven’t sold much.

I’d definitely be having a word, paying £20+ for a bag of coffee it should really be top-notch.

I didn’t think greens aged like roasted coffee so the crop date would be far less relevant than the roast date?

I had that same Ethiopian as part of the subscription in September the greens had only just arrived at the roastery then. So I would guess the greens have been stored at Wendelboe for about 6 months, given that they have a very good setup for green storage I would hope that the greens wouldn’t have noticeably aged by then.

Obviously every green is different in regards to aging but greens can last for a long time if stored with good temperature and humidity control.

I would get in touch with wendelboe about the coffee if it doesn’t taste that great and see what they have to say. When I had the same coffee a few months ago it was very good, surprisingly funky and tropical for a wendelboe coffee.

Edit: I just checked our current green stocks and the natural Ethiopia that we have is from Q1 2023, so the same harvest period. The current harvest for Ethiopia has just about finished now but probably no one will have late 2023/2024 crop ethiopia yet. So any roaster that has Ethiopia for sale currently got it from 2022/early 2023.

This wouldn’t the first or the last time, we would receive coffee roasted weeks ago (example, 6 weeks past) or receive coffee that would tastes woody, burnt and ashen.

I received a bag (£100 a KG) that was roasted 6 weeks past. It doesn’t mention the roast date but BBE date. I got in touch and advised them 6 weeks is not acceptable. It’s nice they refunded. The coffee was still very good, though.

Another popular roaster’s, with whom I had some lovely cups in the past, 4 packs of coffee weren’t good. The two were ok with milk, the other two went to the bin. I hate binning but, I couldn’t drink them. These bags cost £14-£16 per 250g! I had thanks for the feedback reply and nothing else. 😂
