I saw one of these on Amazon and started trying to understand it. In simple terms, would it let me drop a sample on it that will give me a reading that will let me make adjustments to hopefully improve my coffee, or will I end up as a wobbly jelly in the corner of the room?

dfk41 I don’t think it is going to help you at all. There is more that you can do with your scales, grinder settings, notes on how much you liked the coffee. I can’t see you having the patience to persevere with it. It won’t point you to Nirvana with an occasional reading, it will only tell you if you are miles out - with careful use.

There is already a thread about the R2 and how following DiFluid’s instructions may not give the best repeatability, I outlined the procedure I used in that thread. The Di Fluid R2 was then comparable to my VST lab II for filter coffee.

I have the VST Lab II, Atago coffee, Amtast & Di Fluid R2 refractometers, I can only recommend the VST & DiFluid R2 for filter coffee & the Atago for espresso only.

dfk41 I think David, you would be constantly calling me about how to use it…and I would be saying I use android, I know nothing about Apple. It is one of those products where you really need to RTFM.

I watched half of this video

and the chap said in all truth enough things (around the 10 minute mark) to make me realise I would never get anything out of one of these devices…….I am glad that some people on here know me well!

dfk41 Aramse’s protocol is unnecessarily complicated, I wouldn’t be prepared to do all that - just use the protocol on the thread I linked, based on the VST protocol. They already did the work before Gagne & Rohan (whoever he is) decided they needed to jump through extra hoops to make the device work as intended, to the accuracy & precision specs supplied.

You can’t taste TDS…that’s why EY measurement is useful.

Aramse, Gagne & Rohan cannot test accuracy.

Forget Youtube for learning about EY & refractometers.

Still, I think you have the answer you need.
