Lelit Elizabeth. Pressure gauge's needle not moving

I bought a Niche Zero; waiting for its arrival “some time in March”… No second hand market for these that I could find around.

Since I can’t use my machine until the said date I decided upon a Wilfa Uniform (275€ on Amazon Spain, yes, there are much better grinders out there, but if I had to sell/store it after the Zero arrived I opted for something on this price range). Saw the Hoffman review where he prepares an espresso with the Uniform, and where he says that it could ALSO work for this type of coffee, and decided to purchase it.

If you assure that this is the problem I have no option other than to return it to Amazon and buy another one. I don’t want to get crazy on the price though since “the expensive one” is coming a few weeks later. Any recommendations?

If the grinder is new and you can send it back then I would do that, your pressure needle is not getting ‘stuck’ on preinfusion, the coffee in the basket is simply not providing enough resistance for pressure to build which is why water is gushing through and hence the need to grind finer. As Dave said above, your shot against the blind filter shows the Elizabeth is working properly.

Maybe a hand grinder whilst your waiting for your Niche to arrive, JX-pro or similar? Dialing in espresso on a hand grinder can be a little tedious but you won’t have to do it for long!

As someone suggested I think the minimum viable is something like the Sette 270. If you can find a Sette 30 for > $100 less than the 270, you could buy the 30 and purchase the 270 adjustment ring from the manufacturer. You could then retrofit it on the 30 and have the same grind capability.

I’ve just returned the Wilfa and ordered a Sette 30. This will get me through until the Zero arrives.

Thanks to all for this - just bought an Elizabeth last week and had the same ‘problem’ - just ground the coffee a LOT finer and got 10 bar - hooray!

The puck was left stuck to the group head afterwards and was a bit sloppy - guess I might have ground too fine now?

I’d bring the dose down by 1 or 2 grams before touching the grind…

creditchris when I first started using my Elizabeth I dosed at 16gms as that’s what I read was the sweet spot for this machine. Every time I got the puck sticking to the shower plate. I tried adjusting the grind but that more often affected the taste and didn’t seem to have any effect on the sticking puck. I tried altering the dose and at 18g in the double basket I never have (yet) had a sticking puck. I now just need to adjust the grind to sort out the taste whenever I change beans. I use the steam pre infusion settings of 3 seconds pressure to wet the puck, a further 7 seconds maintaining the pressure(3 bar) and then the flow starts at around 11 seconds when the pump goes on at 9/10 bar, manually stopping the shot at around 35g in the cup which then runs on to 36g. The shots take anywhere from 35 to 45 seconds depending on the grind setting but I don’t bother too much about time as I’m adjusting the grind for the taste.

Aim for 34g of liquid - 17g dose, or 36g/18g - in 32 seconds or so.

Go from there.

Puck sticking is an annoying feature of this machine. You learn how to mitigate they with practice.

Thank you all - I tried 18g at slightly coarser setting and this worked really well - I got 36g out in about 27 seconds and no sticky puck.

I’m a complete novice so learning on the job so to speak, but loving this machine so far (and this forum is brilliant!)
