EddieMoonshine I don’t think anyone has mentioned this but double check how long the phone you choose will be supported for with updates.

Yeah this is a good point.

Not sure about Android but iOS is currently supporting back to IPhone XS which I think is 2017.

I’m guessing they’ll deprecate the oldest model as each new one is released so models roughly 6-7 years old should be supported.

I still have an iPad from 2016… (typing from it). It still receives occasional security updates on iPadOS 15.8.3. The same is for my previous MacBook, bought in 2013.

For the Google Pixel phone (I wouldn’t buy other Android devices as I like the system to be stock, rather than modified by Samsung or Motorola or whoever): https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=en-GB

MediumRoastSteam My macbook is a 2020 model but about 2 ¼ years old. In fairness I am on it more or less non stop from getting up to going to bed. In a typical day I now charge it up at least once depending on what state it is in. The battery capacity is at 84% and I am quite happy with that. I will keep it until the battery drops below 60%. I guess I could say the same with my phone. It is a 13 Max Pro about the same age. I top it up every morning and the maximum capacity is at 95%. So that should last me another couple of years as well…..

If I can can get a cheap 14 Pro I would, MacBook upgrade next year .

Not sure what your use case is… but for me, battery below 60% capacity is hardly a reason for changing - just charge it more often.

I change my computer when it can’t deal with the tasks I need to do, or it becomes a security risk.

There’s no reason why a mid range MacBook Pro shouldn’t last 8, 10 years in a domestic environment these days. My previous one, from 2013, retired last year. (The power adaptor broke, the disk was getting too small, no more software upgrades and it was becoming hard to run modern software on it).

MediumRoastSteam There is no real case for changing either but there again we all change things from time to time for no reason. As I have said, my background was to change everything annually, simply because I could stick them down as business expenses……I am having to learn that no longer applies!

The Nothing phone has some security issues, I personally would avoid.

I have been looking a bit more closely at this. It is a very interesting project and with the expected introduction sometime in 2025 of the 3rd itineration it will set the market on fire with AI. The CEO is quite open in that he suggests the flagship companies are now scared to innovate therefore they churn out new phones every year that have very little advancement in them. I think I have to decide if the features on the 2 are more suited to my simple needs than the expected features on the 3. I have seen very little comment regarding security issues, but all phones have those issues.

How would AI help you? Honest question. I thought you used the phone for calling and texting, but not much more than that (if I remember correctly from one of your posts).

dfk41 - No idea. I’m not a fan of non-stock products (ultimately, that NothingOS or whatever is called is some flavour of Android. Likewise with Samsung, Motorola or whatever. So for me, there are only two options: Apple (iOS) or Google Pixel (Android, stock). I actually have both, and don’t mind either of them.

                  Nothing phone? meh.

MediumRoastSteam, I replaced my 2014 MacBook Pro 4 months ago with a iPad Pro from music magpie and it was not cheap (to me £700) but was in immaculate unmarked condition it will keep me going for years (I hope!) and my iPhone SE was recon from Giffgaff and has been great and also being retired I cannot afford new Mac products and would not pay for new stuff anyway
