So, this year I decided to go for my usual gammon, but this time with bone in, just because I often hear that bone in meat tastes better, plus I’ve gone off the idea of the preformed pressed together meat joints.
I was looking at the more upmarket grocery establishments - M&S, Waitrose - and the likes, thinking the quality would be there even at a price, but as they say, you only get what you pay for. But a few days before Christmas, I was in Aldi and came across this…

It was the only one left and no price on it. So I asked and was told it was £18.99. Bone in, crackling and a glaze and enough to feed the two of us for a fortnight. Job’s a goodun.
I have to say, it cooked up beautifully, crispy crackling, lovely glaze and the meat tasted great. In fact, I would go as far as to say it is THE best gammon joint we have ever had.
5 days after Crimbo, I again went into Aldi for some milk and there in the cold cabinet were three of those beauties reduced to £14.99. So, another was bought and popped in the freezer. But it doesn’t end there…
Today, I again needed to pop into Aldi for some spuds and carrots, and there in the cold cabinet was one lonely bone-in gammon, reduced to the princely sum of… £7.49! Well, it would have been rude not to.
Both vacuum sealed, so less chance of freezer burn and besides, they will not languish in the freezer long enough for that to happen.
Ham and cheese sarny anyone?
