Shower screen downside

Have used one when using my EKs to aid dispersion but see no real benefit with the Flat Max. Have always rinsed after use but, today, I soaked it in Cafiza. After half an hour, the solution was noticeably brownish. If you use a screen regularly, how often do you deep clean it? My worries are the build up tainting the shot so I won’t be using it for the foreseeable.

I use a sonic bath for keeping puck and shower screens clean. Depending on the machine, keeping a puck screen clean can be less overall work than frequently cleaning out the shower screen (and anything upstream in the machine).

Fair point. Shower screen contamination is less of an issue with levers as there’s no solenoid to cause back pressure

Since using my MHW-3Bomber puck screen my shower head stays squeaky clean. Even when I empty my drip tray which I do after every shot pulled, the water in that is also clean. Still take out the shower screen and soak it in Puly powder once a month along with my puck screen, when I also do a clean of the water reservoir with a Milton tablet…A bit OCD me thinks.

I was looking at getting an upgraded shower screen for my Sage Dual boiler but using the puck screen I am not so sure I need one. Go to admit the MHW-3Bomber puck screen is far superior than the one I had before.

I was ultrasonic cleaning mine every few days. I ended up with four thick ones used in sequence and ultrasonic cleaning all 4 together every two weeks. Having said that, what I use most now is precut filter papers as that is the easiest workflow wise.

You should be able to buy the already cut to size papers easily from Amazon or other marketplaces.

I’ll admit that like Alex, I’ve also switched to papers so I don’t have to clean the screens (or fish them out of the knockbox). Added benefit is that I can change the dose level a little more and maintain group clearance in a smaller basket. Once a week screen cleaning was not enough and any more often seemed too much of a headache.

Well blow me down. A while back, I spent twenty minutes or so drawing around some Aeropress filter papers using my 58.5mm puck screen as a template and cutting them out to fit my portafilter. Now I am not complaining as such, as being retired finding something to keep me occupied can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. In that twenty or so minutes I managed to do about twenty… and now looking on Amazon I can buy 300 for just £4.99!

What next?! Someone will be telling me I can buy a tool specifically made for de-clumping grinds rather than using this…
