MWJB Let’s forget any specific grinder for a moment…how do you personally decide how much coffee to dose and what variation is acceptable? (Just out of interest).
Thanks for your thoughts @MWJB , perhaps i picked the wrong “review” to focus on 😎
In any case the grind my weight doesn’t interest me id rather grind by dose.
My first grinder back in the dark ages was sage smart grinder pro. It was not the best but it also was a good first choice as it was relatively cheap and i didnt lose a deal selling it but what i learned from this grinder was “hopper fed grinders” were not for me. Too much faff, too much mess .
I had previously decided single dose was too much hassle but after owning that one I realised that “FOR THE HOME ENVIRONMENT” and FOR ME single dose made complete sense.
I also decided water spraying was a bad idea due to reading about corroded burrs mainly on Facebook and now im thinking , were these people literally spraying their beans with (a lot of) water as i now see sll the benefits!!!
Dose size for me Was a tedious one as you probably know i seldom drink straight espresso shots which would make life easier if i did!!
Finding the right combination of mug size, milk volume and coffee volume was a challenge.
Having moved through sage duo temp pro to sage The dual boiler and buying a niche zero i was in a happier place!!
Basically i ended up with all vst baskets over 16g and a sage bottomless portafilter to be able to use the larger ones, taste wise i changed, in the region of 21 to 23g, in to s large denby mug depending on the beans .
Im basically idle and have no interest in latte or any milk art!!
I steam in the mug and brew directly in to the milk EXCEPT WHEN DIALLING IN . When dialling in or when the mood takes i do brew in to espresso cups and try the shots direct and with a little water but my preference is still with milk. My method produces basically a flat white consistency which i was introduced to during 6 months working in Melbourne!
My main complaint with the df83v2 was inconsistency which was anything from plus or minus .3g retention
With other grinders i expect to get out what goes in within .1g at .01 resolution .
I would not taste that as a difference in the cup .
With rdt its basically zero and you do have to weigh the dose after rdt. Zero the cup, beans water and check after transferring to the grinder. For me that’s currently circa -19.8g total dose.
I do not do this on every shot
I was dosing 21 to 22g previously in the ims 32 basket with the evo to get a good non sloppy puck but having acquired the thick cintered puck screen i reduced to the 19.5g ball park. Thanks again to Daves videos for the ideas.
Its the only reason I use a puck screen .
Why do ims or ACS not make a 30 basket??!!
Hope some of that at least makes sense.

Ive learned, a boring pattern with no splatter around the edges indicates good puck prep. Yes, i stir it prior to drinking 😘
You can get a right mess by lightly tamping!!!
