Wow, wow, wow, what a grinder.

Has anyone purchased this grinder?

Watch the video below and if that does not put you off then, wow!! What were you looking for. Or am I watching it wrong.

Retention is measured in beans as well as coffee retained in there and around the burrs.

I bet Acaia are really glad they sent this unit out for review.

…… And im an acaia fan!! Love the lunar and dosing cup . Thats one grinder i dont need to buy to try 🤭

Doesn’t look ideal, but the Wilfa flat burr grinder can hold on to a bean, or two, from time to time, similar can happen in a few hand grinders (anything with a narrow feed, or the CafeSing Orca), a shake/wobble will usually free them up. When spritzing RDT I’d sometimes see beans fail to feed in the Zero & Ode.

He does say, other than the bean feeding issue, retention (dose consistency) is really low, so if we say, just for illustration purposes, typical difference in/out is +/-0.2g (to 95% confidence) and a typical bean might weigh 0.18g, You could still be around +/-0.5g, on occasions that a bean got stuck (maybe it doesn’t happen every time, assuming you don’t only brew Maragogype, or Pacamaras) which isn’t terrible. Weighing in/out would show up any shortfall straight away and you can chase down those stubborn beans.

The trouble is, he mentions these concepts but doesn’t actually measure to demonstrate what/if the issue is to any resolution.

5:40 is enough to say to me, do Not Purchase. Needs a redesign!

    Thanks for the warning

AND then we get to 15:02 , how much is left in there?! And that’s not counting the beans that do not make it to the burrs!! Not even the df83 was that bad!!

Wow, people are going to buy this thing?!!

Compared to this, last time i opened the Kafatek or Philos they were near spotless .

The Acaia on paper interested me…. No longer.

I guess we can conclude, this “review” was not sponsored by Acaia even though they provided the grinder . The guy gets my vote for a honest review.

I wonder if it “works betterer” if rdt isn’t used and the acaia ion beam is mounted.

This is a q better view, probably spent more time with it too, dont know how much of an advertiser he is vs daddy got coffee

I wouldn’t suggest otherwise, but I’d be much more interested in a competent review, substantiating the perceived pitfalls (I have no interest in purchasing this grinder, nor recommending it, just whether reviews put things in proper context.) He should be able to tell you how much goes missing, whether whole beans unfed, or/and what is left in the burrs…but oddly, he doesn’t. Weighing in & out, rather than trying to grind by weight (GBW) would be the way to go to be sure (neither Kafatek, nor Philos do this…but given the low cost of scales, I don’t see why GBW would be an important feature for a home user).

Are these ‘missing’ beans a product of the GBW/auto stop (also a feature on Wilfa & Ode) feature, or an inherent problem in feeding? Let’s face it, if you want GBW, you’re not likely to be paying as much attention to what whole bean weight goes in, because you know what you want out?

Adrianmsmith Compared to this, last time i opened the Kafatek or Philos they were near spotless .

These are both fairly recent grinders, I haven’t seen a full dose consistency test of the Philos anywhere, but remember that in previous decades (and continuing through today), Mazzer, Compak, Rancillio & many others all made grinders with several grams variation in dose consistency…and people lapped them up.

Let’s forget any specific grinder for a moment…how do you personally decide how much coffee to dose and what variation is acceptable? (Just out of interest).

Thanks for your thoughts @MWJB , perhaps i picked the wrong “review” to focus on 😎

In any case the grind my weight doesn’t interest me id rather grind by dose.

My first grinder back in the dark ages was sage smart grinder pro. It was not the best but it also was a good first choice as it was relatively cheap and i didnt lose a deal selling it but what i learned from this grinder was “hopper fed grinders” were not for me. Too much faff, too much mess .

I had previously decided single dose was too much hassle but after owning that one I realised that “FOR THE HOME ENVIRONMENT” and FOR ME single dose made complete sense.

I also decided water spraying was a bad idea due to reading about corroded burrs mainly on Facebook and now im thinking , were these people literally spraying their beans with (a lot of) water as i now see sll the benefits!!!

Dose size for me Was a tedious one as you probably know i seldom drink straight espresso shots which would make life easier if i did!!

Finding the right combination of mug size, milk volume and coffee volume was a challenge.

Having moved through sage duo temp pro to sage The dual boiler and buying a niche zero i was in a happier place!!

Basically i ended up with all vst baskets over 16g and a sage bottomless portafilter to be able to use the larger ones, taste wise i changed, in the region of 21 to 23g, in to s large denby mug depending on the beans .

Im basically idle and have no interest in latte or any milk art!!

I steam in the mug and brew directly in to the milk EXCEPT WHEN DIALLING IN . When dialling in or when the mood takes i do brew in to espresso cups and try the shots direct and with a little water but my preference is still with milk. My method produces basically a flat white consistency which i was introduced to during 6 months working in Melbourne!

My main complaint with the df83v2 was inconsistency which was anything from plus or minus .3g retention

With other grinders i expect to get out what goes in within .1g at .01 resolution .

I would not taste that as a difference in the cup .

With rdt its basically zero and you do have to weigh the dose after rdt. Zero the cup, beans water and check after transferring to the grinder. For me that’s currently circa -19.8g total dose.

I do not do this on every shot

I was dosing 21 to 22g previously in the ims 32 basket with the evo to get a good non sloppy puck but having acquired the thick cintered puck screen i reduced to the 19.5g ball park. Thanks again to Daves videos for the ideas.

Its the only reason I use a puck screen .

Why do ims or ACS not make a 30 basket??!!

Hope some of that at least makes sense.

Ive learned, a boring pattern with no splatter around the edges indicates good puck prep. Yes, i stir it prior to drinking 😘

You can get a right mess by lightly tamping!!!

Nothing against daddy got coffee i spoke to him when the duo was being released but hes a business and content/sales

Yeh and the reason i believed it was i mostly agreed with what he said about the philos, not fully but mostly.

Was his review of v2 and aramse a v3 maybe ?

I like both ot their videos and like the dry humour or aramse😎

From what I see on Youtube, there aren’t many ‘right’ ones, or at least consistency in process.

The reason I asked about your dose was that, if you do have scope to vary dose by 0.3g (appears to be what you are saying) and you end up buying varying sizes of bag, then you can probably work around dose consistency issues. (In terms of efficient dosing/bag, rather than any taste attributes).

              MWJB

I still like the one never to be repeated blend shot when ending one bag and starting another 🤔
