  • Eureka Mythos....the long awaited thread

I have bought a ‘used’ Mythos….so what I hear you say! Let me give you a bit of context I got into coffee 20 years ago, or more. I started off with a Classic reconditioned by that official Gaggia firm in Leeds paired with a £45 Starbucks burr grinder…..and I thought I had the dogs dangly bits! Anyway, it did not take long to enter the rabbit hole that we all know. My machines and grinders became more exotic, until eventually with help, I ended up with a Londinium L1 and an original Mythos (In the days when there was only one version). We all knew that at the time the L1 was without question, the finest coffee machine available to man (it was many moons later that the rowlocks was shattered) but the Mythos was always certainly up there with them.

They are pig ugly, enormous in size but have a really good set of Mahlkonig made 75mm burrs, mounted at a horizontal angle of 45 degrees. Coupled with a spin speed of 1350 (from memory) there was no place for the grinds to go, except out of the chute.

They never really became fashionable in the home for a number of reasons. A best kept secret! Many houses just do not possess the room for such a commercial monster after all. With time, new models came out but they always retained the original. The new versions went for a reduced spin speed (circa 800 I think) and Clima Pro technology which was basically a fan that switched on with the machine and always annoyed me! I have had a couple of these, selling the last one when lockdown happened. My coffee habit was to change and I did not need a grinder capable of grinding double shots very quickly all day long.

So, having moved my Monolith on to a new home yesterday, I had more or less decided to become a one grinder house again. That was until I saw a Mythos for sale (and had been for several weeks) not too far from me on FAcebook MArketplace. I rarely buy from there as there is no buyer protection and is full of scammers. I was able to enter into a dialogue with the seller where we talked about a lot of things as I know the area quite well. All the info I asked for was quickly supplied leaving me the impression this was a genuine sale. The deal clincher was when I explained how to obtain the shot count info for each button. As far as I used to know, there is no way to wipe or reset these figures. There is also a reading that displays the continuous run time since it was first switched on so it will be interesting to see exactly what that figure is when it turns up!

So, I know of a couple of Mythos owners on here. @John_Yossarian and @Jason1wood are both long term owners so here is your chance to chip in and extoll the virtue of the hopper against th ever so fashinable single dosing system!

I did go down the single dosing route but quickly missed the speed and ease of the Mythos, and to my taste buds, no change in taste. Some of you may say bollocks but I am a smoker and don’t have super sensitive buds.

Anyway, enjoy David, sure it’ll put a big smile on that face 🤣

Just a quick size comparison, the My Mythos 1.3kg hopper doesn’t quite fit though

Grinding by timer can be pretty accurate. Obviously not as much so as single dosing but I have always held the belief that very few people can taste the difference between a shot made with 18.12 gms and 18.41 gms. You have to play around a bit more with the settings but the convenience of being able to insert a pf, click the button and dispense is just so pleasurable, to me anyway. I was having a quick look through some old photos and came across these

Enjoy!! A Mythos has always been something I’ve listed after over the years, but never quite found one at the right price/distance/condition to go for it. Size obviously also matters!! It’s always been an itch I’d like to scratch one day. Looking forward to hearing of your experience with it and if it lives up to the memories of when you last owned one.

Wow that is a beast…. Don’t think i would ever have the space to hide one of those :)

thewelshvet Wwhen I moved to my bungalow in 2018 I was still working. That meant that I could buy, own, sell my coffee gear as I always had. I bought a brand new Mythos Clima Pro through a dealer and disliked it immediately. The machine had a fan that turned on whenever you switched the power on ad was quite loud. In a cafe environment this would not be noticeable. The CP also had a much slower spin speed and I always thought the taste it produced, although good, was inferior to the original model. I also find it interestting that they still continue to make the original faster spin.

I have my saddle ready for Friday!I wonder if this is the start of a trend away from single dosing, with all its benefits. On the whole, cafes shy away from single dosing unless it is a speciality coffee but the domestic market has largely driven the coffee revolution of recent times. Happy days!

For context, on the right was an HG One, then a Londinium L1, then the Mythos and lastly a Compak K8 or K10. I had both at the same time but suspect since there is only one in the picture it is the K10 conical. A couple of more photos. The first grinder actually dwarfed the Mythos! Does anyone know what it is?

And just another non relevant photo that I like

The Mythos became a cult grinder back in the days when everyone had a Mazzer Mini or a modded Major.

If my memory serves they went for around £700 - £750? Marks and Spencer equipped its cafes with them and moved them on when they were still pretty new making them a favourite on the used grinder market.

Clima Pro was overkill in domestic setting. It’s raison d’etre was to deal with grind drift in a commercial setting throughout the day which isn’t a problem in a home setting.

Congratulations on your new purchase of a loyal Mythos. What you mentioned about the reproducibility is very true. I have done tests and the difference over 4 seconds has always been 0.1-0.2 g.
I have modified mine removing the bulky hopper and replaced it with custom made one that could take up to 6 doses at once. I have made a weight that fits the profile of the mini hopper so it is always under the same weight.
A few years back I replaced the burrs with original Nuova Simonelli titanium burrs so I believe it has another, at least, ten years in it, if not more.
I love it so much that even tempting Niche Zero or Duo offers did not make me going for them.
Call me old fashioned but the built quality and the power of the beast are very impressive.
    Enjoy!

At the back of my mind was the question, have I fallen for a Facebook Marketplace scammer! Then at 9pm I received a note from DX Couriers informing me they had collected the package and who they had collected it from, for delivery on Friday. Not long to wait now!

The chrome grinder in the black and white photo was an Elektra Nino. I bought it along with a Vesuvius from a car dealer in the Lake District in about 2015 called Slas 111. The Nino was both enormous and retained grinds like a good ’un! It was a 68mm conical that had a 500 rpm spin speed. I sold it to someone who bought and sold that I fell out with in the aftermath of the demise of cfuk and the Vesuvius was sold to another name from the past from cfuk, MrBoots2U……

Well, I paid for a 48 hour service which would be tomorrow but have ust had this drop in to my emails…….

In addition, I ordered one of these yesterday as well as a metal clump crusher which I seem to recall was vital. @Jason1wood has the same hopper. They are 1/3rd the price of the correct small hopper but look the same. Jason assures me that they do not fit quite properly with a little overhang but the saving was too great!

Defo clump crusher David. Makes a massive difference as you’ll remember

Right, unpacked and on bench. it is in lovely condition having been cleaned thoroughly before being put away. But, there is a small issue to sort out. Dropping beans straight into the throat and by passing the hopper, everything works and the motor makes a nice noise but the coffee does not come out! The dial to adjust the grinds is loose, so me thinks whoever cleaned it to put it away has not tightened something up.

My technical knowledge stops there….LOL. I will do some reading and try to get an understanding of what the issue might be. I am guessing if I am lucky then there might be a blockage in the exit chute. If not (there are no un normal sounds) then the burrs might not be in properly. We will continue and try to find out!

theres still lots of these fs on ebay,

they are monsters, is that a pic at the side of a major? i did rate my major and found once modded for single dosing it was really consistent
