I hope this post is appropriate here, but please remove it if it is not allowed or violates any rules.

I want to introduce and share with you a tool I created to help me record and manage my coffee roasting profiles. I created this tool as an app called RoastersPal that works on Android and iOS phones and tablets.

The app can help you create a roasting profile with any roaster, including portable (Nuvo, Hive), popcorn makers, fluid bed roasters (SR540, SR800), GeneCafe, Behmor, etc. Simply enter or update the temperature in the dialog box that will appear at regular intervals (MANUAL mode in the app).

Later you will be able to edit the created profiles by adding notes and details about the roasting, additional comments, import/export profiles or share them with friends, calculate losses, find a recipe* based on a specific parameter (e.g. density, agtron or cooking level), back up profiles and restore them* from one device to another, etc.

The app can also work in AUTOMATIC mode, but for this you need a Bluetooth device that connects to the app and automatically receives the temperature from the thermocouple.

In the future, I plan to install and send requests to an A.I. that could help evaluate or rank your profiles, help create labels, etc. I also plan to offer slightly more advanced Bluetooth devices of various sizes with x2 TC, LED display, etc. So, get in touch if you want to have one.

More information about the app, screenshots, videos and tutorials on how to create a Bluetooth device (Arduino-based) can be found on the website. There are also a few videos on YouTube that demonstrate how everything works. In the blog section, I add information about future plans, development, and show you how to use the app to get the most out of it.

New features added in new app version (2.1.0):

Backups. Back up your profiles and restore them on any device. I have about 120 profiles and I really needed this feature to restore all profiles on my new phone :)

Drink recipes. Search for a recommended coffee drink (Espresso, V60, Aeropress, etc.) recipe based on roasting parameters (Density, Agtron, Roast level). A guide from screenshots and a short video how it works attached.

Drink recipes are recommendation-based recipes designed to get a balanced cup of coffee as quickly as possible. I created the recipes using data and methodology found on the density.coffee website.

Personally, I have had several cases (especially with new bean varieties) where it was difficult to quickly find the right coffee recipe. I usually run out of beans before I can dial in for a perfectly balanced drink :)

While looking for the reason, I found out that the density of the roasted coffee has a significant impact on this. Darker roast = lower density. Sometimes you need to increase the dose, sometimes reduce the shot time, sometimes the temperature or do something else to balance the cup. So I started paying more attention to it :)

What do you think about density? Is it an important factor? Do you pay attention to it when trying to dial in the “golden” coffee cup? :)
