Many years ago, as a treat I bought my son a bottle of Creed Silver Mountain Water for Xmas. Must be 12 years ago and I asked him about it yesterday and he said it is still his favourite and he has ¼ of the bottle left. I bought it in Fenwick’s and it would have been circa £100. I checked on it yesterday. A 100ml bottle was £285!

That prompted the question!

I have Creed Santal and Aventus. Lovely scents but my fave is a bottle of Insurrection Pure bought from Amazon for £40

Not unusual David but I don’t tend to buy aftershaves with designers names over them. Do prefer to buy from proper perfume houses.

Aftershave is for car salesmen, gigolos and Tower Controllers.
As a Tower Controller I wore Obsession.

I’ve worn the same one daily for about 12 years, I just checked and it’s £234 for 100ml. That will last me probably a year though. It’s subtle, I’m not a fan of strong perfume scents.

It’s an indulgence for sure, but to me it’s just a nice way to top-off taking care of yourself like smart, clean/ironed clothes and tidy hair/shave.

I forget their names but I reckon one cost me about £150K and another at least £50K, this being the price each one cost me when they worked and I then had to get myself out of the relationships they attracted, lol.

I’ve tried noted aromas who do dupes of designer fragrances for £20 odd. I found the copy of a hermes fragrance was indistinguishable to my nose. I’m sure other such companies exist.

I bought Aramis aftershave back in the day, I can’t remember exactly how much it was under £8 I think, which was a lot in 1978. I didn’t like aftershave, so never bought any again.

I use old spice on the dome after a DE shave, I don’t bother with anything fancy, use it purely for the “burn” to seal up those cuts or nicks!

Tal got into DE shaving a while ago and bought a Gillette black beauty from 1971 Q3 (my birth)

Need to get back onto them forums to move them along if I can remember what ones haha

Jason1wood I have flirted with DE shaving many times but it never lasts long! You just cannot beat the shave a modern multi blade head gives you. I hate shaving and do it once or twice a week. Luckily I am not that hairy! Remind me next time you are over Jason and if you want it, I have a tin with 3 or 4 DE razors. I know there is a Merkur and a Gillette plus quite a few blades

dfk41 I’ve also stopped David, just a quick whizz with electric shaver does me now as I’m also not that hairy and my lass likes a bit bark haha……

Thanks for the offer though. There’ll be a few quids worth there. Get them sold on. 👌

I just use a Fatip Piccolo, nothing fancy. Will Google your Gillette!

Never paid much for aftershave. Back in the day Brut, Hai Karate or Aramis. Today, good old M&S do a nice selection.

Last year though, I had a yearning to try an aftershave that has been around since 1938…Old Spice. So, put it on my list to Santa. He obliged and I like it. I don’t know why, but at 66 it feels like the right aftershave to be wearing. A bit like a jacket with leather patches on the elbows😁

Tal Exactly, my preference is Afta ‘Fresh’ scent as it’s crazy cheap and conditions the skin nicely. Also, I have to be mindful of obnoxious scents wreaking havoc on these lungs (asthma/synthetic allergies), so that rules out 95% of the overpriced crap on the market.

For some reason I have stood at the entrance to the aftershave rabbit hole, looking in to the dark abyss! Never having spent more than £80 or so I have bought some Creed Viking, Creed Silver Mountain Water and 3 bottles of Mont Blanc Star Oud for myself and my sons. I found this website

            https://fragrancehouse.co.uk/

I have spoken to the owner three times and he is both helpful, knowledgeable and his prices are very keen. The Mont Blanc is about £130 everywhere and his price is £105. There are plenty of reviews and he offers all the usual payment methods including Paypal and Klarna for security. I rang him this morning to ask about a Kouros replacement as the current version is a shadow of what it used to be. His advice was do not buy anything blind as it settles and smells completely differently on different people. Instead, he is going to send me a handful of samples.

I firmly believe that when you get good service, you acknowledge it!

Something I’ve noticed with fragrances is that the more expensive ‘boutique’ (for lack of a better term) options tend to last longer throughout the day.

Some of the ‘big name’ / high street brands, even expensive ones smell nice but then an hour after you’ve applied them have more or less gone.

Some of my favourites for subtle styles that last all day - Le Labo, Diptyque, Byredo is pretty good. DS & Durga are nice (also do good car air fresheners as an odd side note…)

There’s also classic ones like Santa Maria Novella.

Basically anything that you find in places like Liberty’s is likely to be a notch above, not always in price but in quality.
