We upgraded to triple-glazed windows and new doors three years ago. The radiators are five years old, and we had a surveyor confirm that our cavity walls and attic are fully insulated. This place was built in 1980.
Our boiler, though, is a bit ancient at 17 years old. The central heating keeps things at 17°C from 7 am to 7 pm, and then drops to 10°C after that. We’ve got a fireplace in the living room that we use as needed.
Despite all these upgrades, our average gas bill is still £135, and electricity is £92 a month from October to March. Not exactly cheap! We’re trying to figure out how to lower these costs, especially since I work from home most of the time.
We never know when the boiler might just throw in the towel.
