DavecUK I’m not sure what you mean by this. I usually listen to Radio 3. Pitch has moved up a down (mostly up) for centuries. Pitch in Handel’s day was A 415 about a semitone lower. It is all relative and I don’t have perfect pitch.

Not really relevant to this actual thread but I am just interested from what you say about tuning or perfect pitch.

Is it possible to say exactly what a note is from one note being played say on a piano keyboard just by listening to it. Never really thought about it before and I am not a musician so I guess I would have no clue. But would the regular musician.

    About Me

Adrianmsmith There is perfect pitch and relative pitch. Perfect pitch is where a person can say what the pitch is of a musical sound is without any reference. Relative pitch is when one is given a known pitch and then other pitches are derived from the reference. Hope this helps.

Adrianmsmith Someone with “perfect pitch” will be able to tell you what a note is on an instrument just from hearing it. That assumes that the instrument is in tune and tuned to a pitch they recognise - normally based on A above middle C being at 440 Hz.

Even people with “perfect pitch” will get thrown if tuning of an instrument is to a standard they don’t recognise. After all “notes” are just names given to sounds at particular frequencies. If you tune a piano to 432 Hz that A note changes frequency but is still the same note.

It can be learned too, like learning a language.

I remember taking grade 8 and having to listen to an unfamiliar melody and then either write it or describe it. I certainly wasn’t able to do it naturally and had to spend many hours training my ear.

Even now I marvel at people who can sit and write music on a manuscript like they’re writing a story in a book and know exactly how it will sound in their head.

I still got and use Spotify here and there, but the past couple of years I’ve been using Bandcamp more and bought over hundred albums. I don’t listen much to mainstream music, who get millions of plays and probably make a fine living out of it.

Smaller artists barely get anything from being on Spotify, but through Bandcamp I can buy their music and they get 82% of the revenue on average. If you buy anything on Bandcamp Fridays, Bandcamp waive their revenue and the labels/artists gets everything.

Yeah I love Bandcamp. It’s often been the only place to get the vinyl from some artist I’ve purchased from and I agree their revenue model is very good.

I’m actually really enjoying Tidal. The ‘Daily Discover’ playlists seem to have already worked out some good recommendations and the higher quality streams are definitely noticeable.
