I think with the recent rise in popularity of single dosing, folks tend to try a lot of different beans. I was guilty of that as well, but recently I found a roaster that I actually enjoy. I used to like darker beans but I am mellowing with age and now find medium or medium and a little bit suits. I tend to enjoy blended beans over single origin. When I had my Duo I went through a stage of buying beans that I thought were expensive and drinking them as americano and various filter styles.

My tastebuds are just not subtle enough to appreciate brewed coffee though! I always find myself coming back to the strength of an espresso made with 18 gms of beans extracting about 34 gms over 30 to 40 seconds. Then a few months ago I decided to ditch single dosing as my go to and revert back to a hopper fed Mythos. I have just had my 10th 1 kilo pack of these

They are down on their website as medium to dark. I have suggested that puts people off as dark they are not! My first kilo order was May 12th and I have also tried other of their offerings in that time. One of the things I like about this coffee roaster is their service, and their pricing. the Chocolate Fondant is priced at £21.99 including postage. If you go for a subscription you get an automatic 12% off bringing it down to £19.35 delivered. If a subscription is not for you then once you hve placed a few orders they send you a code for 10% off anything you order.

I have tried a lot of the blended beans. They do a full range of single origins as well as blends. Perhaps someone could order some and tell me!

I have these on subscription too David and very happy with them. Also Wrexham Bean Co. with Calon another blend too as a sub then buy other favourites I use Black Cat and Rave to fill up my shortfall each month.

Provably 6 months. I used to buy coffee in bulk with a few friends because of the discount + free shipping. But they want to stay the same and I want to explore new things. So i just started to roast myself.

I’m 8 months in with the same decaf that I roast myself, in my humble opinion it’s one of the best I’ve tried. It’s easy to roasts light , I hit the same temps at exactly the same time and have about 13.5% loss each time, I’m amazed at how consistent it is.

It’s fruity, has lots of body and texture and basically very little discernible “decaf method “ taste which I really dislike .

I just bought some roasted decaf off a very good roaster and it’s not half as nice. I could happily have this decaf coffee indefinitely it’s that good.

If it’s a sample roaster then more than happy to donate a couple of hundred grams to see what you think. If your on a kilo+ roaster then may be a bridge too far 😬

I’m still very much enjoying it and have no regrets about buying it thanks.

It’s a good companion to the Philos for beans on the less light side and delivers impressive results. I have to say the Philos is also a fantastic grinder and I enjoy the coffee from this as much.

Ironically I have an old Niche that I use for any beans showing any oils ( as it’s so easy to clean) or where I can’t get a good result with the other grinders and it always seems to deliver. You can’t beat it for the thick gloopy espresso that’s perfect for milk based drinks.

At the end of the day they are all different. I baby the Monolith more because it was such an investment and whether that means I don’t enjoy using it as much in case anything happens I don’t know. My husband says life’s short so just enjoy it and as we all sadly know this is so true. I stick anything and everything in the Niche and don’t fret because in comparison to the Kafatek it would be much easier to replace.

The Monolith is a fantastic grinder and even though I have no engineering knowledge, I can appreciate how well built and designed it is .

Platypus I will likely never purchase a Monolith, but I'm still impressed by its specs - how it is built is pretty much overengineering, very precise, very durable/reliable components. Does not scale well (in economical terms), and will not be cheap, but you know it will last you a life time, if not two

As for not using it all the time, short of feeding it pebbles it should last ours and the next generation.

As for price, i don't think they are overpriced for how we know they are made.

Doesn't mean you can measure the coffee to be 4 x the price of the philos etc, doesn't have to.

But it does mean consistency.

The longest time, before getting onto coffee forums and deep down the rabbit hole I was using supermarket beans. For more than 2 years I've been buying Lofbergs. It was among the few beans that had a roasting date and most of the time it was about 4 - 6 weeks after the production date. The flavour is ok, especially since I only drink lattes, but lacking body. Now I'm down to experimenting various sspecialty ones, but not yet sold on subscriptions.

We do vary our bean purchases but keep coming back to Monsooned Malabar. Not always from the same supplier.

Nothing else seems to do it for my 'customers'. :)

I like to vary what I buy and am nearly always guided by you knowledgeable lot. I never get the nuances described as my taste buds are just not that refined but I can't say I have found one I have not liked… they have all for me, made decent drinkable cups of coffee. But, the one I always have a bag of most frequently as a back-up in my freezer, is Rave's Fudge Blend.

On starting my coffee journey it was the first I ever bought and it was that which showed me the light.

Simple mind, simple tastes… a coffee simpleton… that's me.
