Sage Barista Pro - stops after a few seconds

SAGE Barista Pro – failed again

It failed 4 weeks ago and – each time stopping after a few seconds and giving 3 beeps.

After full soak descale & flush, then reset defaults it’s been running fine for past 10 days.

This morning did my coffee – fine.

Then noticed ‘Flush’ on the display.

Started Flush sequence …. Did the prep then pressed the cup button – run for 3 sec then stopped with 3 beeps

Repeated many times – each time stops after 3 sec and then 3 beeps

Back to trying standard shot

Again runs, this time for 5 sec then stops with 3 beeps

Same if I run without Portafilter – ruling out coffee grinds.

Same fault if used ‘auto’ or fully manual - 5 sec only

Hot Water - runs for 3 sec then stops with 3 beeps

Steam wand – this runs OK … does not stop.

Removed water filter in tank (in case limiting water) no change

Reset Defaults – no change

Suggestions? …..

I’m not in a hard water area so no calcium build up.

Thinking to:

Strip and check flow meter

Remove and dismantle and check solenoid valve

Anybody anything more logical ….. or even know what the 3 Beeps actually means

Sargan This firm used to be the only authorised Sage repairer in the UK. I am not sure if that is still the case but you could ring them for advice.

Sage offer a repair service ..moderated by Coffee Classics, I’m trying to resolve myself first.

For 2 reasons …

Cost as have to pay shipment each way

It’s intermittent fault and could end up with a lot of parts being fitted in hope it fixes issue.

I took out the Flow meter, it was clean, but also mad3 clear jet was 1.2mm.

Fitted new O ring and reassembled. Used contact cleaner on contacts & plug.

All working again .. at the moment.

Sargan - I suppose given the cost of repair you have nothing to lose by trying and fixing it yourself. One of the reasons I did not buy a Sage Dual boiler - going for the Lelit Elizabeth instead. Standard components/parts and easy to do it myself.

Previously I had a Gaggia Classic, very easy to get into (Sage is a real fiddly thing to open)

Very easy to work on, lots of space as no built in boiler, and all standard and in the main pretty solid brass parts.

Sage is certainly a lot more configurable, very sophisticated but it is packaged with a lot of items, very little space and lots of plastic parts & clips, all difficult to get at.

Even videos on-line of how to do some tasks comment on how they broke the clips getting into it.

All back working at moment … Hope it lasts.

I’d like to turn down operating pressure of OPV as it running at around 16 bar, and would be better to have it set to 9 bar

Sargan On the DB this was quite easy to do electronically……attachments will not upload but if you watch the YT link it is all explained

SAge DB Modifications

Change pre-infusion to 60 seconds and reduce pump power in 5% increments until you are hitting 9 BAR with your desired grind

Just hold down the up and arrow keys until this shows

and change it to something like 60 seconds.

Then press menu , this will show (with a different number )

Change that to 95 , exit to confirm, and see if the max reached now is 9BAR. If not do the process again but reduce it to 90 and try again

Can you explain further ?

Surely only way to change brew pressure is by adjusting OPV valve

Sargan I am presuming that your machine has an advanced menu as many do. If you can access it then it opens up a whole host of options to you. I have no experience of your machine but thought it worth mentioning. On checking, your machine has no advanced menu so the only option is to turn the valve screw manually

I have no idea on the advanced menu … but OPV is mechanical and therefore not software controlled

Sargan The hack lets you set the pre-infusion level and pull the shot at that desired level without increasing pressure

I have pre-infusion covered off, I only want to decrease the shot pressure. Barista machines are typically 12-15 bar, which is too high to get optimum extraction, 9 bar is teh golden figure.

The only way to reduce this is by reducing the pressure at the OPV

Sargan Have you watched the video? I know it is the Dual Boiler (of which I have had 5) but as I tried to say, using your taste buds as the guide you can pull the whole shot (up to 60 seconds) at 3, 4 or any bar you choose. I have had amazing results with this.
