I’m going to throw in a contrary opinion, this is from someone who favours medium, to medium dark roasted beans, but happy to try anything. I tend to have a kg bag of a go to bean, plus a few other smaller bags of things I’m trying out.
I have a Niche Duo, brilliant bit of kit, no doubt the Zero is also superb, I would happily own a zero to go alongside my duo. I use my Duo for espresso and it is amazing at switching between beans, back and forth, no dramas and consistent. I weigh my single doses into 60ml centrifugal tubes and use as needed, works well.
However, I recently acquired a Specialita that was allegedly not working properly, it just needed cleaning and realignment of the burrs, its working perfectly. Intention was to move it on.
But, I have to say, sticking a day or twos worth of beans in the hopper, dialing in and getting the timer near as dammit is rather satisfying, I know the weight of my PF, so I don’t zero my scales before grinding, I am at the point of only weighing roughly half of my doses as well. they are almost always within 0.2g, sometimes 0.5g at a push, but as long as I am +/-0.5g I am happy. Timing doesn’t vary enough for me to care, I don’t purge, I don’t WDT, I just grind directly to the PF, tap it on the mat to settle the grinds, weigh the odd dose, then tamp it directly. The rate at which I can knock out 3 or 4 coffees when we have visitors is brilliant.
Of course I cannot switch beans with it, I use the Duo still for that, but for a go to bean, 1kg at a time, I am struggling to part with it if I am being honest…..
