Have a look at the bottom, under the water tank. If you spill water and drips down, there are some wires there.
Clean it up and let it dry, try and use a funnel going forward.
Those plastic crumbling protection things are not that big of a deal. Any hardware store would have replacements or, you can get some shrinking sleeves and heat them up.
