After many months of mulling things over and following the death of my close friend Dave, I have come to a decision. I am going to sell ALL of my espresso type coffee gear and move over to brewed coffee. Therefore over the coming weeks I will be advertising on here, as I scour the house.

Initially I am going to use a Hario Switch, immersion method. Expect lots of stupid questions!

LMSC I have seen many folks do this over the years. I have just lost my mojo a little bit. I look at the espresso scene and am not excited about any aspect of it. Brewed as my only coffee source means that I have to update my game without falling back to my espresso setup for americano. Might I regret it? I will not know till I try but I look forward to the future!

Cuprajake Ok, I feel that I have to ask for some pointers as to how you ‘brew’ with it!

Having watched a video, I can safely say the process would cause me to implode! Start off at about 3.30

dfk41 put in the paper filter, then coffee coarsely ground,then select the filter3 profile and you enjoy your cup

Hario Switch seems rather inexpensive. Just buy it now, try it and see if that’s what you like drinking. You only lose £40-£50 not hundreds if you decide you don’t like the process or the outcome.

Or is it that Elizabeth is no longer appealing to you?

By the way, try the Toffee Apple instead of your usual, much sweeter and more enjoyable I would say than the Chocolate Fondant.

Clodius Thanks for your thoughts. I have one of the Chinese things in my basket and I am just about to buy it. I am going to need two anyway for when I have guests. Funnily enough, I cancelled my 2kg per month subscription today and bought 4 250 gm bags to try

and I am sure eventually I will find one that I like enough to jump into subscription mode. Meanwhile I have about 50 gms of Fondant left so will quite happily use that. Am I right in thinking that beans for brewed coffee do not need to rest as long as beans for espresso?

I was going to ask: is it the process or the outcome that you’re no longer happy with?

if it’s the process just give Hario a go. Not sure quality of Hario is better than the knockoffs in terms of output, feel and longevity.

If it’s the outcome then maybe what you’re doing now, trying new beans, is a good way to experiment.

PS the Kenia looks interesting, but I just saw that it’s a light roast, a totally different taste profile.

Clodius Sorry, I did mean to address that point but forgot. I have been heavily involved with coffee for 25 years. I used to change my kit around every few months but not so much since I retired. Dave and I used to chat for around an hour a day, sometimes coffee related, often political. I just find that the hobby side of coffee does nothing for me now. I am drinking americano without milk most of the time. The Elizabeth does this very well and I really do rate it.

Something in my head is telling me to move on. The first step started when my Evo broke down, and I replaced it with the Liz. I proved to myself that I could make good coffee with budget equipment ( purely based on past ownership). I am not one for experimentation but I do like a challenge. Once I am settled into the brewed routine I might buy a Gaggia Classic or La Pav that I can switch on quickly for those guest moments, or I might just say coffee and reach for a jar!

dfk41 Or you could give your guests coffee from a cafetière? Seems silly to buy coffee equipment to please guests, if you yourself no longer use it.

Assume you’ve had a la pav already! But I’ve been using mine as you describe, a quick espresso hit!

It heats up from cold to brewing temp in about 7 to 9mins, depending how much water is in the boiler.

I time it and have a K type thermocouple attached to the group. I aim for around 80C to start my preinfusion, the PI heats the group by approx 10-12C very quickly, I’ll assume the water inside is hotter still.

My shots have been coming out brilliant and seems to be taking around a minute or so in total from lifting the lever. So that’s a shot in around 10mins from cold.
