Hario Switch spares

I ordered a Chinese Switch that arrived today. I unwrapped it and immediately threw the packaging away as the bin men were due. Then later, when I was washing it I noticed the steel ball was missing! Does anyone have any info? Hario EU sell them but they are not listed on Hario UK and the EU mob will not post to the UK! I just thought someone on here might also have experienced this!

dfk41 I just measured the one in my official Hario switch not my Chinese one & it’s 14mm. There’s quite a few available on Amazon

Was it already “one” unit when it arrived or did you have to put it together?

With the Hario Switch mine came all in one piece ready to use and there is no way for the ball bearing to fall out?

It makes me wonder if it even came with one in the first place? It’s definitely not stuck inside as mine does this and has to be pushed down?

Just a thought but you never know.

Gagaryn Many thanks! Stupid question! There are 2 sizes, ½ and 5/8ths. The latter is available tomorrow, the former in June. Does it matter which one?

I enquired with HArio UK. They do not stock the parts even though the Hario EU do, and re-directed me to Japan!

Platypus On my original Hario Switch, the ballbearing falls out continually. I believe the newer models have a set of rubber ‘teeth’ which stops the things from falling out. I will never know as unfortunately I threw the packaging away as the bin men were due at any moment! But, emu who I do spend quite a bit with (!), just refunded me and did not want it sent back, so you could say I scored! The replacement bearing were about a fiver delivered and arrive tomorrow!

I’m pretty sure my Chinese switch had the cone packed separately from the base & like @dfk41 the bearing was loose in the box as I thought that it hadn’t been sent until I heard it rolling around.
My pukka switch has the teeth that retain the bearing & it takes a bit of effort to remove it whereas on the Chinese one if the cone is removed the bearing will easily fall out

PartySausage In the first picture is the Hario and as you can see, there is nothing to prevent the bearing falling out. In the second picture, the new orange Chinese one there is a rubber disc with 3 teeth which I presume will work. There was nothing in the cone box, no packaging so I would have expected to notice it if it had been there, but hey ho!

dfk41 Ah I see. It’s quite possible that your Chinese switch didn’t have any balls to start with. 😳. Mine did come in a box with the cone wrapped in bubble wrap, but the switch was just in the box so I thinking the ball got dislodged in transit maybe the courier was playing football with it because the bag & box were pretty bashed up, which made me fear for the cone when I saw it

My Chinese switch was in the van, which I’ve just got back from the garage so did a comparison. Apart from some very minor dimensional differences externally both switch bodies have the ball retainers. (Chinese switch on the left)
However, the ball in the Chinese switch is only 12.7mm so ½″ in English compared to the 14mm ball in the Hario version & it pops out of the switch body much easier as a result. So I might get a 14mm ball ordered & replace it
