Hoffmans steaming water for americano

Like quite a few folks, when I saw this I dismissed it as a novelty…..a filler in for his YouTube content. If my DB has one fault it is the water the water tap produces is extremely hot. In essence it means you have to wait a bit longer. So, I just steamed to 65 degrees for the first time. On the DB it lets you steam into the pitcher without human intervention, so stick in your thermometer and make your espresso.

I am not suggesting for 2 seconds that I can taste any difference…..but I can drink my americano pretty quickly!

Surely it would be pretty easy to split the shot and do one with the hot water tap and one with steamed water to compare

Dusk Yep, that would be easy if I was bothered! I meant just to say the water from the Sage is too hot and this is a solution

Most machines have the hot water tap drawing water from near the bottom of the steam boiler rather than the brew boiler - so the water would be coming out at 125C+ (or whatever your steam boiler is set to). The Elizabeth is different as it draws from the top of the brew boiler, and if the steam boiler is pressurised it will also mix the water from near the bottom of the steam boiler with the water from the top of the brew boiler - resulting in the water being around 100C and won’t flash boil on exit.

MediumRoastSteam Yep, I remember it well……and of course you could still draw how water when the steam boiler was off…..still, steaming gives me a workaround

There’s probably a reason why most machines do it from the steam boiler but it’s never made sense to me

I actually like it.

Others moan about mineral build up.

I use mine for hor water for tea and Americano so pull quite a bit of water through.

My wife has americano and doesn’t want to drink it straight down so letting it cool a couple of minutes isn’t an issue, more an added feature….. i guess

Dusk - Dave used to say that, if you want to make an Americano, you use the kettle. One of the hot water tap main purposes is to actually refresh/recycle/drain the steam (service) boiler. It shouldn’t really be used as a source of hot water. Although one cup a day (to keep the water in there refreshed) is a good idea.

For one… why bastardize espresso by adding ANYTHING to it and two… who cares what Hoffie or any others do? He should stick to roasting better coffee as that still leaves a bit to be desired.

JonWoo187 Considering espresso is normally about 90% water, a bit more water won’t cause it to catch fire.

JonWoo187 I wanted water of a suitable temperature for adding to my espresso. The water from the machine is too hot to allow me to drink it straight away. I could boil a kettle of course, then let it cool down or I could heat water using the steam arm……does it really matter which way I do things?

I do not like full strength straight espresso no matter what beans or who makes the shot

I do not like pour over or filter of any description

I do like espresso based milk drinks

I do like espresso based americano for want of a better word.
