In the bottom picture I see clumps.. clusters even. Maybe that can account for uneven flow for example if there are more of them in one part of the puck, and maybe the WDT just spreads them more evenly.

crimson89 I understand but I think the ‘clumps’ on the bottom one are so small they are not going to make any difference. At some point I will cut a puck in half and inspect

That’s what I use as well. I think you can pick them up for around £15 online from the usual suspects.

I saw some vibratory tamper thing reviewed on Youtube costing around £40. I use a fairly basic tamper combined with (cough) a lady’s toy to produce a similar effect.

Clodius It is amazing what some folks can do! Many thanks. So in plain English, the same grinder, same bean the effect should be very similar between the two samples but if you used same bean, 2 different grinders there may well be some small differences?

Basically the two do the same thing, difference is that because Timemore spins the other way around it avoids throwing the grounds towards the exterior of the basket (which for Umikot is anyway minimal because of the planetary rotation)

Clodius I have written to Sigma Coffee who I bought it from. Not to complain but to ask their opinion. This means I will either get a load of nonsense back, or a serious conversation.

If the coffee is spread evenly and the taste/flow/experience/whatever else is satisfactory this is a non-issue. Enjoy the product and do not worry.

dfk41 A couple of days with this now and I quite like it. Why? Because it has one job and that is to distribute the grinds uniformly in the pf. I do not really get clumps although the camera on my Iphone suggests that I do.

Maybe the answer is get an android phone. May get better results. That way .

I have not tried one of these. I have tried manual WDT many many times and can honestly say I do not miss it. Just extra faff with no discernible difference in the cup.

There was also a lengthy thread some time ago about WDT and after watching those rather long videos from JH I was on board. I did notice some differences in shot time, etc. But I definitely could not taste the difference so that was another short-lived experiment

Sometimes it is very hard to argue with logic. You go onto social media and are bombarded with well made videos where they throw bags of coffee in the air, weigh into a cup, drop in slow motion into the grinder, 5 minutes later after spraying, grinding, stirring, leveling etc etc etc they pull a shot. It looks fantastic and ought to make a difference…….but how many people are able to really discern the difference in taste?

Yet we all (me included) waste a load of cash proving to ourselves its 80llock5 🤓 whilst, without actually telling any outright lies ,make reasonable comments on social media until well after we sell the stuff 🤡

…. and of course really piss of the likes of the creators in comments to their videos saying what a load of crap it is. Yet the herds or sheep continue to say how like gods they are , when they defend themselves, not wishing to piss off the manufacturers they are promoting even though they say they are not 😎
