Tamping stand

I’m getting fairly good results with my relatively new bottomless portafilter, but holding it at the correct angle to do a level tamp is a challenge. I was just wondering what people use to level it, e.g some sort of tamping stand/ station. I have seen some things on Amazon but don’t want to spend yet more money (Niche on order!) than I need to.

Dumnorix I use this. Very solid if you have an appropriate worktop.

An ice hockey puck works pretty well for a bottomless portafilter. £3.50 from ebay.

As my handle is curved (and I have a 3D printer), I printed a little base to lift it up to perfectly level. It worked fine without this though, as you could just have the handle off the work surface. This just makes one handed prep a bit easier, which is useful with a baby in the house.

I’m currently awaiting one of these, which I intend to rest my tamper and distributer on when not in use and use for the holy trinity of WDT, distriution and tamping during puck prep (but a word of caution, they haven’t shipped it yet after 3 weeks so I might be having to request a refund). Looks like a good tool for me. Basically an accessory I need to rest other accessories on.

For naked portafilter I found it quite easy to tamp on a rubber coffee mat. I also tried this which turned out to be pretty rubbish, my fat Silvia portafiltet would not fit in it well.

I just rest mine on my tamping mat and don’t seem to have any trouble getting it level as the bottom of the portafilter and basket seem flat and level.

And this for my portafilter with spouts…

I had this same situation as my work surface has a curved edge making those edge fitting mats impossible.

I can’t comment first hand on their quality as I haven’t yet ordered one but there’s quite a few nice looking wooden ones on Etsy that have a space for the tamper and leveller, and a part for tamping with adjustable height.

Mainly because the walnut matches my Bianca more than a slab of black rubber…

Many thanks for all your suggestions- looks like I can come up with something without breaking the bank. I have to say the ice hockey Puck is genius!!

Dumnorix I’d like to say it was all my idea, but I saw it on a forum somewhere else.

I especially like the fact it’s small enough to go on the top of the machine when not in use. For my setup having a silicone mat out all the time just wouldn’t look right. I did just use a coaster I had kicking around as a tamp mat for the first year though.
