I’m enjoying discovering new coffees so much… Browsing the local suppliers is a pleasure, the only thing I am noticing is that I have an impatience to try out new beans! I’ve got these https://en.gringonordic.se/product-page/the-hobo waiting, which from the description sound exactly the style I like… I guess I could change the beans in the Mignon, but it’s got me thinking of single dosing, and (predictably enough….?) a Niche… Question for the panel - am I just being lazy? Is a diagnosis of “accute upgrade-itis” the real truth? :-) I’m also thinking that there is a chance I’ll hit on a blend I like so much, I won’t want to change, and will miss the convenience of the Mignon… FWIW - my opinion is… *Beginner suffering from extreme impatience and upgrade-itis, best treatment is to keep learning patiently with the excellent equipment I have…*

@"jcb1973"#p9027 Keep the Mignon; Niche for convenience, easy workflow, single dosing more than 1 beans — be it espressos or pour overs. Once you are used to Niche, I am sure you won’t look at Mignon.

My 'upgrade-itis' for want of a better word, came from the fact that I knew I was never going to get even close to being able to appreciate 'real coffee' and the many different flavour profiles of different beans and combination of beans, unless I had the equipment to be able to grind and brew correctly. The only other limiting factor then was economics, and not just how much I was prepared to pay, but how much I could afford to pay. Once I had equipment good enough to open up that real coffee vista, I knew I had to stop. Now it is down to me and my taste buds. If I come across a bean that ticks all my boxes, that has me sitting back with a deep sigh and puts a smile on my face every time I try it, then I might say that is my 'go to' bean and I'll always make sure I've got some in. But, the beauty of this 'hobby' is that now for a few quid, I can still dip my toe in when the fancy takes me, or when someone gives a recommendation and buy a bag of beans to see what surprises they might throw up. The thing is, I haven't found my 'go to' bean yet, and I think it will be a long and very happy journey before I do, so the Niche single dose grinder is perfect in that respect. As for the espresso machine… I'll admit I do still look with a certain amount of envy at some of the beautiful chrome syrens out there and think 'what if' but then I give myself a reality check and say for my pocket, my needs, blimey even for my limited ability in being able to taste whether I can get a hint of caramel, or peach or burnt toffee, my Sage DB will do. Of course, if that goes kaput… well then as Sean Connery once said 'Never say never'. I've been to Sweden a few times over the years as I have an old friend who lives in Trolhattan… Loved your Swedish kebab roll (dürum döner). I swear if someone opened up a shop over here selling them, they would make a fortune.

I reckon that for consistently full flavored coffee a single dose grinder is a must. It's not simply upgraditis, it makes a noticeable difference in the cup. That said, I am a self confessed fussy bugger. Niche is an excellent mid priced option. I only parted with mine after an EG-1 arrived on my doorstep.

After moving to a single dosing grinder last April (DF64/Solo) I cannot see myself ever returning to a hopper fed grinder. The ability to switch between 3 different beans a day without the need to purge and waste beans is exactly what I want.

Upgrade-itis / single dosing

coffeeb As many have said before if you are wanting more bags of beans on the go single-dosing is the workflow for you.
I am on the other spectrum I pay a small premium on buying smaller coffee bean bags, feed into my hopper grinder. Grind for multi brew methods to taste different notes and then usually this process over a week, I will finish the bag and I will clean it out at the weekend and open a new bag that has been resting for the next week.
Rinse - Repeat
For this I have found the X54 very good. I am planning on buying a commandante as well because I like the community recipes available (following clicks), travel benefits and supposed flavour profiles for filter coffee. This will also feel any urges to crack a bag open that one of these fellows has recommended early :D
