Bezzera Unica PID not heating

Morning all,

Just hoping for some advice.

In short, my Bezzera Unica PID is not heating even though it still turns on. When I switched on the machine this morning the fuse board in the house also tripped so I suspect there is an issue with a fuse or something like that.

After a quick Google and an attempt to reset the high limit switch (which I was probably not doing correctly) I have exhausted my technical know-how and called the supplier.

I’m just hoping someone on here might have an idea and some guidance on other possible faults and how to fix them.

Any help will be appreciated!

Can you elaborate a little more…was it a breaker or MCB (Overload), and RCCBO (overload and RCD protection) combined) or an RCD that blew?

This is because it might be a:

Fault to earth
direct short

Knowing the type of device that tripped is quite important e.g. if it was the main RCD it might well be just a short to earth…if it was only a breaker…it could be an arc or short (we don’t use arc fault interrupters much in domestic houses). If it’s an RCCBO, then it could be either.

Hi Davec,

Thanks for the reply.

If it helps at all it was the RCD pictured which was tripped when turning on the machine.

The supplier has said to "remove the top body of the coffee machine and reach the boiler.

You will find a button on top of the boiler, please press it hard, this will reactivate the thermostat."

I’ve tried this but with no result.

Any suggestions?

OK if that tripped and it’s 100amp I see, then it’s quite likely it’s an earth fault.

Heating element failed
short to earth

Open machine…while unplugged check wires that nothings come of, melted, abraded and shorted to the case or a boiler. Check there isn’t water spraying/leaking causing a short to earth.

Disconnect the heating element, keep heating element wires away from the boiler case, so they don’t short….and turn machine on. Make the pump run…If it doesn’t trip anything, then it’s almost certainly a heating element failure.,
