FREEZERS IN GARAGE

Listening to R. 4 the other day they mentioned that freezers §are rated (temp wise) to the area’s where they are sold. The jist of it was that with hotter weather some freezers would be struggling to maintain temperature and motors could burn out. Freezers in UK are not rated for extended high temperatures 40 deg c. , particularly when they are in external garages where temp’s can go way above external temperatures.

When I was looking to get a freezer for the garage back in 2014, the problem was that not all freezers can function in very cold temperatures… Beko was the only brand that claimed their freezers can work outside as they were rated up to minus 15C. So I got this one (now discontinued) and it has been flawless in the garage ever since. They probably have newer equivalent models. Will the freezer survive two days of +40C degrees? I don’t know, but I reckon its survival prospects are better than mine. ;-)

We put a Beko freezer in the garage last year, it was hard finding anything that was listed for exterior buildings. We put a old fridge freezer in the garage in our previous house and never had any issues even though the unit was not listed as suitable for its location. I suppose we were just lucky. We had a medium sized chest freezer in our concrete shed. No problems with it, it worked a treat. I then needed the shed for my woodworking workshop so the freezer had to go. I bought one of those Keter style plastic cupboards the sort with double doors at the front and a hinged lid that lifted up and you could put a padlock on. The freezer fitted perfectly with a decent air gap all the way round. It sits down the side of our house. Fitted a weatherproof socket to the wall. Didn’t know if putting the freezer in there would work but five years later, regardless of the weather it is still working perfectly well.
