To or not to spray water before grind?

Hi, read some advice to spray 0.1g water to the beans before grinding to get rid of the “static” issue of the grind. May I check what a static issue is? Do you recommend doing that for manual grinder? Thanks.

Knluk there’s no harm, generally. Personally I’d not bother with a manual, hand grinder. A quick tap on the table and the static should be dispersed.

Whatever you do, don’t over do it. If you have steel burrs, uncoated, you might find a few rust spots here and there.

Which grinder have you? Are you getting lots of static?

MediumRoastSteam I am using a 1zpresso Jx Pro hand grinder. Does static issue means grounded coffee sticked to the burr?

I do in my mazzer flat burr but not in the niche conical

Knluk - to the burr yes, but more importantly to the container where it falls, all over the side walls.

Think @LMSC uses one of those and I don’t think he Does that. Might be wrong.

My experience with a Feldgrind was to just give a quick tap and static was quickly dissipated.

MediumRoastSteam I don’t. A couple of taps at the base and on top, and one gentle tap on the table.

Like @Cuprajake said, it depends on the grinder. I have one that sprays like a banshee and it’s a must, but other’s it’s really just an unnecessary addition to the workflow.

Hmm…don’t want rusty burrs.

Also found that spraying caused beans to adhere to the wet walls of the hopper.

So, I put the beans in a dosing cup, weigh, light mist spray (just a touch), stir and then dump into the grinder.

Would however be interested in other means to eliminate grinder introduced static.

Yeah some burrs are coated, like wise after a while the burrs in the niche loose static

My mazzer I give a light spray, it doesn’t take much.
