audiomacgyver I’m not sure what maths they are using. If water loss due to roasting adds $38/lb, then the $254 become $292/lb after roasting. I don’t know anyone making a cup of pourover coffee with more than a pound of coffee, nor a universe where a 12 oz bag costs over 4 times the price of a pound.

If they are trying to draw parallels with a generic $4/lb (green) coffee, then that would imply that a cup of pourover costs $6 - not even in Starbucks - or a 12 oz bag costs $21 - which with the US dollar being where it is, sounds very expensive indeed.

Honestly, at that price point, I’m not even thinking about flavor notes anymore; I’m thinking about the story! I have to wonder, for anyone who has actually tried a coffee this rare: Is the experience 10x better than, say, a $40/lb coffee? Or is the real value in the exclusivity and the unique process?

I’d be shaking too much from the price tag to enjoy it! 😂

I was lucky enough to try the CoE Honduras winner for 2024 it sold for 132$ per pound.
Even on a cupping table with the top 10 Honduras and el Salvador coffees of the year that were all 40$ per pound or more, it stood out as the best coffee of the year for me.
If you want truly crazy prices, the best of Panama from this year sold for 13698$ per pound. Now that is an insane price haha

The barista at my local cafe procured the 2023 cup of excellence winner Finca Los Alpes Nueva Segovia from Nicaragua, while on holiday in Japan. She charged £8 for the espresso which is still the best coffee I’ve ever had. I was curious to find out more and was shocked to find that it retailed for about £800 per kilo! Was it 20 times better than my usual coffee? Probably not. Would I pay a lot more for the same experience? Absolutely!

I guess with coffees in this price range people might be more likely to buy small amounts of green & roast themselves?

In my last 112 bags the most I paid for roasted coffee was £23.33/100g (£2.92/cup…not mad compared to cafe prices), that was 3 yrs ago, factor in the rising cost of living, this one is £48.78 before roasting.

Was that £23.33/100g Colombia Gesha the best coffee I had over this time? No, slightly below average. There were definitely coffees I preferred at half that price.

What was Alain DuCasse charging for a pour over brew? £15?

But, I normally spend more on coffee than on gear, it’s a question of priorities I guess?
