The ac connector was dry. I think the short is somewhere else, and I would like to find out where before starting to buy parts randomly. Hence the question on how to turn the machine on bypassing the pressure valve

@rusty-pie when i needed a pressure stat they were slightly different looking at the numbers, so i got one from acs in the end,

rusty-pie It’s a standard part, you can use either CEME, or MA-TER, just make sure the specs are the same or very similar and if u decide mater, ensure you wire it correctly.

Let me clarify further. I don’t need to be able to brew, just to turn the machine on without connecting the valve.

The rcd trips as soon as the pump kicks in to fill the boilers as water leaks from the pressure valve, so if doesn’t happen when the valve is electrically disconnected and its pipe is plugged it will tell me there is no short anywhere else.

What happens if I plug the valve pipe and turn the machine on without re-connecting the valve wires? Will it give me a fault or will the machine not realise it’s disconnected if I don’t pull the lever?

It will “realise”!

You need to insulate the nc terminal and use s blade connector to short c and no and insulate . That will keep the pump off as it will “think” the system is up to pressure

But

You need to change it anyway so just change it .

Its likely the only issue

as reading the comment below theres no point diagnosing further until the stat is changed as its known to be faulty. its a cheap quick job .

I don’t mean to start an argument but it sounds like you have not read my post properly.

When I turn the machine on, the pump runs immediately and there is a noticeable leak in the pressure valve, and most likely, the leak inside the valve body also causes a short with the body inside the valve itself which trips the RCD.

By the way, the machine had been working fine for weeks and I had not touched the big adjustment screw in the valve in a while. I have never (willingly and knowingly) adjusted the small screw.

rusty-pie I think change the pressurestat first….then see if it trips the RCD. This is what I recommend. This is because you have to change the pressurestat anyway.

This would be my approach if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m literally on the other side of the planet and I don’t seem to be able to source the parts in Australia. Shipping time and cost from Europe makes this approach very inefficient, I want to be sure to order all the parts I need in one go.

So my plan is to leave the valve disconnected and bridge the contacts to simulate the low pressure/high pressure statuses and verify that the pump doesn’t run/ runs as it should and the machine doesn’t trip the rcd, which would tell me that the pressure stat is the only faulty part.

What I would like to know is how to bridge the three black, red and white wires to simulate the functioning of the pressure stat (open/close signal to the pump), obviously with an empty basket to avoid over pressurising the system

If its faulty i will turn the pump on.

You could disconnect the pump

But as others have said it’s more likely to be the stat

So red loose . Black and white shorted with blade connector

If boilers are full and pump runs I’m wrong.

thanks, I’ve missed that’s in your previous post. So, just to make sure that understand right:

Red loose and black and white bridged to simulate full pressure ie pump not running
All three wires loose to simulate pressure low, ie pump running?

Out of curiosity, is red to energise the valve?

Black and white or black and red would be the two legal conditions.

And I cannot stress enough

Ensure the power is off to the machine when you are joining these cables. They are not control voltage. They are main voltage

It is not the lever position or the position of the actuator arm that determines pump on and off. It is the pressure stat . With the lever down or the actuator made if you join black and red. I believe the pump should be running and black and white, It should not.

It is always controlled by the pressure stat switch position.

Yes, I understand that, the reason I want to turn it on with the lever down is to prevent uncontrolled pressurisation of the brew boiler when testing the pump on configuration. The pump otherwise will be running indefinitely but the water has nowhere to go!

disconnect the pipe from the pump, its pushfit, saves having a lever cocked ready to explode the machine off the bench
