Re the above quote, my trick is to coat the surfaces with bees wax.

Update — I finally used a stopwatch while grinding for this morning’s espresso. 10 seconds for 19.0 g, including the bellows pumping time. Not bad!

John_Yossarian indeed. but the proof of the pudding … etc. give it a go, I used it on the Honne exit chute and it worked well. Polishing it a bit may be important.

Did you mean to say “hydrophilic”? Hydrophobic would describe something that repels or mixes with water only with difficulty, such as oil or melted fat. I wouldn’t describe ground coffee as having that property.

As far as the wax goes, once it’s buffed out, it shouldn’t be sticky at all. In fact, it should be the opposite — quite slick. I do woodworking as a hobby, and often use shellac and wax as a finish. I can say from experience that applying wax properly should not leave a sticky surface.

tompoland Hi Tom, apologies for bringing back up a slightly old comment but having recently purchased a DF83 I am curious about the beeswax. The metal funnel supplied with the DF83 tends to build up a ring of coffee around the inside. I also have a tamper that slowly builds up fine coffee dust after a few tamps and so I was curious whether you think beeswax could solve these two issues?

Regarding clogging and the chute — having used my DF83 twice a day every day since the beginning of December, I’ve never experienced clogging. The only reports of clogging I’ve seen have been in the context of grinding a lot of beans at once for seasoning the burrs. Lance mentions this in his video, and that’s what was mentioned in the other report of clogging that I’ve seen.

I’m also pretty sure that the taper was added to the chute to prevent spray of the ground coffee as it exits the chute. I can say that one thing that held me back on getting a DF64 was the spray issue, and I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of spray I’m getting with the DF83. In fact, the stream of ground coffee seems pretty focused, and I think the taper in the chute is partly responsible for that.

I can’t really speak to what the declumper is or isn’t doing, other than to say that I don’t have any issues with my DF83 that I could trace to the declumper being poorly designed.

Lance actually heavily praised the stock itamil burrs too saying they produce better coffee and perform much better than their 64mm counterparts. It looks like a great grinder. Most of the fixes from the DF64 and none of the annoying drawbacks of the DF64P/E

I’d take that one with a pinch of salt. I have never found a situation where Italmill burrs perform better than their Mazzer counterparts. It would be great if they did, because they are 70% to 80% cheaper to buy.

LMSC also, what’s interesting is the chute is clearly tapered on the DF83 which can cause the clogging he mentioned but I recently watched a video of the new version 4 DF64 being stripped down and the chute is not tapered. So seems like they fixed it for the DF64 but not the 83. Strange.

ive got a set off ssp that will fit hahah

they need to sort the grind path out, i know my major is bigger but the grind path is actually short, so i prefer to brush, but a bellows would get all the crud out,

still though, you add ssp and uk wise its over a grand,

I am very pleased with mine with mazzer burrs in. The chute has some grinds sticking to it but wouldn’t call this blocking at all and run it without the cover so see what’s going on for a week. After polishing with wax this is minimal.

I removed the flap part and just left the star shaped clump crusher but might test it without it completely at some point
