Grinds Sifting - Staccato Shots - Any significant benefit?

Has anyone here tried sifting their grinds and or staccato shots? What do you do? Is there a significant benefit? Worth the cost of buying the various sifters? Worth the effort? I’ve seen a lot of hype. What’s reality?

Robert McKeon Aloe is a proponent of it, sifting the puck into layers of differing parts of the grind distribution. It’s not known to have any effect on anything other than shot time.

Even if it had a benefit, way too faffy for me.

I also do wonder what a legato shot would look like. 😬one cup after the other without stopping the pump? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think it was originally discovered as a method of getting a good shot out of a crappy blade grinder.

I was making two coffees for my wife and son’s evening macchiatos. So I had the twin-spout portafilter on, and the coffee came out of one spout only (it does this in ~80% of the shots I make with the splitter, and it’s always the same one - I need to re-level the machine, I think). I was constantly moving one cup in the other one out of the spout every 3-4 seconds to kind of even out the liquid and the extraction stage. Nobody saw me, and the milk hides a lot of stuff… both wife and son liked their drink.

I looked at the concept of Staccato shots and decided I could not be bothered even if there was an improvement in taste. A friend swears by them but I’m not sure he persisted after his dabbling.
