In the last few days I am having issues with forum features not being available. When this happens, I am having the following issues: - No option to Like a post (three dot menu only has the Flag option). - No option to quote from a post (nothing appears when selecting text). - No option to Reply to a post (nothing where the option is usually displayed). - No option to add photos to a post (instead of a few options in the menu, only the option Add an image appears, but instead of working as normal, selecting it brings this code: ![](https://)). - No option to Preview a message in the bottom menu bar. - Notifications only showing the name of the thread, but no specific information that is usually there. - Possibly other things that I forgot. Then, after a while, everything is back to normal. And then it happens again. I assume the problems are on the forum side, but maybe it's just me?

I was having some as well and I noticed they restarted the hosting servers a few times yesterday. At the same time I was experimenting with some extensions and found one that was causing a problem. I removed them, but the changes can take time to ripple through the database. I think because the Cron jobs (unix) have quite a low resource allocation. This is why, pms have to be done with a good long gap in between, because they use a real time push command…but with low resource allocation, if you try and do another when the first isn't finished (error error..X). if I change, add or remove and extension, this can often make things weird for a bit until that change has rippled through…**especially with the likes system**. Yesterday I disabled it and then re-enabled it and it was strange for a while until it had gone through the database. I am actually removing some unnecessary modules and ones that don;t work as they should…this flipping approval of posts. Nightmare, because I don't know why it's flagging so for approval incorrectly, so I just disabled it and will deal with the spammers manually as we did on CFUK. I think of people have not added us as an exception to their ad blockers and pop up blockers, that may not be helpful. Lastly, when I make a change, if you are logged on, sometimes you might need to close the tab/refresh the window, for it to work properly….The good news is, I'm pretty much finished making changes by adding/removing extensions/functions. It's been a complex environment to learn in a short time, made harder by some extensions with small bugs which show themselves when pushing them to the limit of what they are supposed to do.

This might explain why I got an email at 21.27 last night telling me that a post I had made had been removed for having something in it that we might not want to see, or words to that effect. However having checked the very small number of posts I have made they are all still there!

@"Dumnorix"#p1187 I just disabled all the anti spam, were small enough they won't bother us much and if they do…I will take measures then. I have a few simple measures that I can perhaps take. So hopefully you won't see those messages again. My thoughts to reduce spam might be to allow users to register and until a mod elevates them to full user, their posts have to be approved. in this way a spammer usually discloses their intentions on the first post…not knowing it's going to go to approval. We shall see.

Occasionally I need to log out and log back in to restore the ‘like’ and ‘reply’ buttons. I thought it was just my phone acting up.

I disabled the big purple people eater header as well, I was suspicious of it, and achieved the same thing through dropdown menu items on Flarums own top bar. I didn't know I could do dropdowns. so one more possibly troublesome and to be honest, unattractive extension gone.

Currently having the problems again. Yesterday I thought it was because I had another tab opened with an active message box opened, but today it's happening without that. Behaviour is the same: No Like/Quote/Reply to and the bottom menu has less options. Can't add a photo as there is only one button, and pressing it brings up this code: ![](https://). I also don't see Likes on any messages, though I know they are there. Surely it will sort itself out later, but it has been happening quite often on my side. (ah, no option for emoji either).

There is a way I can almost always induce that error. If when looking at the lists of new posts and **I right-click a post to open it in a new tab**, the "like" option is not there. If I then close that tab and click to go to the post, or use the left-hand menu to go to the post…the like option reappears. As you can see I pin the pop out side menu, which you can make appear when viewing a thread by moving the cursor to the left. I can then go from new post to new post just by clicking on the list and not needed to open new tabs. Hope it helps. The pop out side menu is just the list of posts that appear on the home page…and speeds things up, rather than going backwards and forwards from the home page. @"DavecUK"#p1231 Yep, I can confirm I have also noticed the issue is usually (not always - sometimes it doesn't happen, I think) is induced when opening messages in new tabs. This is how I am used to browse forums: I go over the main list, open all the threads I want to read, each in a new tab, then go over them. I will try to avoid that here, because it doesn't work well. However, if that can be fixed it would be good, because I am not the only one who uses the browser like this. I saw another message from a person who said they got a code instead of a photo (can't say in which thread, because it's not opened in another tab, :)) - I bet it's the same issue. When you have the issue - you can't drag and drop a photo to the post - it doesn't work.

If you can use the pop out menu, it's really good and much better than CFUK

Yep. That typing bug is extremely annoying. At times I thought to myself… What on earth am I doing wrong? But, glad to confirm it’s a silly bug. Hope it gets squashed. :-)

The only way to get things back is to try to get the browser to refresh the assets, or via a forced refresh (control+F5 on Windows/Chrome, and cmd+alt+R on Apple Safari). Edit: Looks like the forced refresh method doesn’t always work. :-(

Only in as much as I’m glad I don’t have a Mac…was even offered a new Macbook and turned it down…but that’s another story.

Unfortunately, I can only remove so much to solve problems and as I removed it all….I got nowhere else to go on this one. You could try deleting the browser cache for this site, or doing a page load with complete cache refresh of the siite

Keep refreshing, navigate back to the main page, refresh again. It’s hit and miss for me. It’s working now, but there are times of the day where it’s infuriating. Saying this, it seems to have got a lot better since Dave removed PM functionality.

So I tried Google Chrome on MacOS. Still on Apple, because, err…. I don’t have a PC. This must be a cross platform (iOS, MacOS) issue, and also cross browser (Chrome, Safari).

I never visited this forum on that browser (Chrome on MacOS), nor ever logged in. First time, a clean slate. And the same thing happens. Seems to me there are some misconfigured API calls there.

If others are not having issues and are using Apple devices, then it can only be an issue with my account maybe?

I’m doing my best, but the ability to reply to threads for me is very hit and miss, and at times, I simply give up.

Edit: I logged out. And I see the reply button (and replies on the first page). As soon as I log back in… Broken. :-(

I can’t because they are not really stored anywhere that I know of, the description of whisper says it’s strictly real time push to a single individual. As far as I know, messages between us are stored just between us…but I really don’t know where…there’s no messaging database. I don’t believe it’s in the browser cache and I have no access to it. There apparently was a security issue, but i think it was plugged with the last ever update made.

Here is the discussion, if it makes any sense to you. Personally,|I would completely disable private messaging, if there was a way for users to communicate their e-mails for anyone they wanted to chat to …e.g. selling something, buying something. I gathered from reading the discussion they whisper uses the writers free pusher plan…and my experience has been pusher free is pretty poor and I will bet that’s why we’ve been getting lots of problems with it.

I have had my thinking cap on for a while about how members can exchange e-mails in some way that’s secure, without disclosing them to spammers….I had an idea which might have worked, using spamgourmet but that’s now shut….I will think of something.

I access the forum on my iPhone and iPad. I only use Safari. I don’t have a Mac.

However, one issue, which I face is disappearing like, reply features even if I open the threads on the same window. It requires several refresh, click the left arrow or logout / login.

There is no set pattern to this error.

DavecUK - ps: deleting my PM’s was a suggestion. It doesn’t mean that’s the cause of thenissue I’m having.

I have just tested on my son’s laptop: Windows/Chrome. Guess what? Same thing happens. So I can now categorically say the issue I’m having is cross platform and cross browser.

It’s also weird one cannot deleted or clear or archive a conversation. The UI would become very cluttered if you talk to more than 5 people.

DavecUK The email on yous signature is similar to Apple’s hidemyIP, which gives a random anonymous email ID.

LMSC I only use a IPad at the moment and have the same issue. I log out and back in again and usually the issue is resolved. As you say there does not seem to ba any pattern to the problem.

LMSC - I have confirmed that the same behaviour happens with a PC, with Windows and Google Chrome. The Apple aspect is a red herring.

I also notice that, when it happens, the Private Message icon disappears.

My bets are on the PM system.

I had to refresh and navigate away many times on this forum before I was able to reply to this. 3 minutes of my life wasted before I was able to type the first character of this reply. 😬😉

The sessions I spoke about were on a device which has never visited freeflarum.com ever before. So there was no cache or cookies to clear. :-)

Dave and I spoke about it at length. There is a strong possibility it is the private messaging system messing things up, but we don’t know yet for sure.

As I browse right now (touch wood), there are no problems. This is on MacOS/Safari. @DavecUK , wondering if you have done anything?

There extension for pms was never going to work, because it used a free pusher account to support. As a few forums probably installed it this account was rapidly depleted and hence most of the time it threw up errors. I didn’t know what pusher was and when I finally set up my own free pusher account…I realised it was just nagware, as you got 2 to 3 emails per day telling you to upgrade because you had reached the limits of the free account. The next crappy tier was 48 usd per month!!!

There is no extension to do that inside a thread. Flarum always shows the original poster in the discussion view on the home page, or when visiting an area with posts in it.

yardbent I should have added this, but was on my phone at the time. In post I use the pop out side window on the PC. I can of course see the OP in the side panel, with a mouse hover.
