Following some discussion in the Evo Leva thread regarding funnels that sit inside vs. those that sit outside the baskets: I think the issue with baskets that sit inside is that the rim is unnecessarily too large, interfering with the coffee. However, it doesn’t need to be.
I have two funnels (pictured below), the silver one sits inside (but the rim is only a couple of mm deep); the black one sits outside. I much prefer the silver one (it’s heavy, stainless, and the depth is perfect for me). I don’t use the black one at all (light weight, and because it sits outside it doesn’t stop coffee from going on the rim of the basket):
As I don’t fill the basket to the rim anyway, the 2mm rim of the funnel doesn’t interfere with the coffee at all, while still keeps all the coffee inside the basket and away from the basket rim.
One can argue that I could tamp through the black funnel – yes, I can do that, but I don’t like it, because I want to be able to use three fingers on the rim of the basket when tamping to keep a level tamp. I can’t do that if tamping through the funnel.
Finally, here is an example of a standard funnel with an unnecessarily deep rim inside the basket (it’s @CoyoteOldMan ’s, I think) . Why are they designed with the rim so deep?
